Free Scripture Card – S – Seek and ye shall find

Seek and ye shall find

Seek and ye shall findThe whole scripture verse reads in Matthew 7:7-8,

Ask and it shall be given you

Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth;
and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Most of us have stories where we cry out to God and he hears us. I have plenty. One of my recent ‘prayers answered‘ is when a massive truck deposited a humongous load of soil on my drive. Yeah! Organic veggie feast! Not quite yet, but hopefully soon!

Seeking to stay alive

I recently finished writing my story of survival. After I ruptured my appendix, the doctors in the emergency room decided against operating on me; convinced that the odds were stacked against me. So yes, I’ve been searching all right: seeking to stay alive and searching to regain my health and to keep on going against all odds. Click here if you like good endings. The book is free.

Rejoice in the Lord. Free Scripture Card – R –

Rejoice in the Lord.

Rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation says the prophet who wrote the Book of Habakkuk approximately 612-589 B.C.

I like the Book of Habakkuk and I’ll tell you why.

Rejoice in the Lord

Habakkuk questions

Why do evil people seem to prosper?

Habakkuk’s name means ‘to embrace’ or ‘wrestle.’ Prophet Habakkuk wrestles with the question, Why is there so much evil in the world? And why does it seemingly go unpunished and not only that. But why do the evil people seem to prosper? Prophet Habakkuk has many questions like this and he puts them to the Lord.

The answer comes back loud and clear that the people referred to by prophet Habakkuk are arrogant and proud with inflated ego’s. Habakkuk was told by the Lord that the proud, the greedy, the idolaters and warmongers will all enjoy the fruit of their doings. But those who genuinely follow the Lord. they are the ones who have faith in Him and rejoice in the Lord, cause He will save them!

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him:
but the righteous shall live by his faith.

Who are the righteous?

Those who faithfully keep my laws, live by their faith

The righteous shall live by his faith. Who are the righteous? According to the bible the righteous, or ‘just’ as they are also called, are those who follow God’s rules and laws. They are the ones who are promised life and salvation.

He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws.
That man is righteous; he will surely live,
declares the Sovereign LORD.

God decides everything

Why do I like the book of Habakkuk so much? Because I’ve often been surrounded by people who mock my religion and my faith. I know plenty people who know better than to ‘believe.’ Why would they? They are comfortable in their big houses and with multiple cars and holidays and plenty money to throw around. They believe in their wealth and comfort and have faith in their own ability to produce whatever their heart desires. This is because these people haven’t as yet realised that it is God who decides  e v e r y t h i n g.

I used to be a little bit like that too. Not a lot because I never had stacks to throw around but always enough.

Otherwise seemingly devout people often insist that the above scripture verses indicate that ‘faith’ on its own will get us there. What?

The scripture verses above indicate that ‘just’ behaviour is followed by faith; and not the other way around, as many would have you believe. Why does this matter? It matters because it is an arrogant stance to take to think that just faith is sufficient, as we will see below.

The Lord is my strength

Be not deceived. The above scripture verses make it clear that it is those who ‘faithfully’ follow God’s directions and make an effort to live according to his laws are the ones referred to. The ‘righteous’ shall live by his faith.

I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The Lord God is my strength …

Faith is a product of righteous living.

That is why I like the Book of Habakkuk. In one swoop Habakkuk deals not only with people living carelessly and proudly without  having much regard for the people around them but he also deals with those pretending to be ‘devout.’ In addition he sets straight the people who lead others astray by saying that just faith is enough.

Faith without works is dead

Habakkuk tells us that faith is a product of righteous living and not the other way around. This is reiterated in the Book of James as below,

What doth it profit, my brethren,
though a man say he hath faith,
and have not works?
can faith save him?

Even so faith, if it hath not works,
is dead, being alone.

Thou believest that there is one God;
thou doest well:
the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man,
that faith without works is dead?

by works a man is justified,
and not by faith only.

For as the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without works is dead also.

Isaiah 30:14-16 In Quietness and rest shall ye be saved

In Quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. Free Scripture Card – Q –

In Quietness and in confidence shall be your strength

For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

Isaiah 30:14-16 In Quietness and rest shall ye be saved

What does this mean?

What does that mean, ‘In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength ..?’

It means that whenever you experience turmoil in your life, your best bet is not to put your confidence in man but pray and trust in the Lord. History tells us to heed God’s warnings.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God makes an extra-ordinary prophesy to the Jewish people under siege and they are told, not to collaborate with other nations, not to run. But instead to return to the LORD.

These Scripture verses in Isaiah are a warning of what happens when we don’t follow God’s guidance and at the same time these Scripture verses are a wonderful reminder of God’s promises and the benefits which flow from obedience.

Warnings

In Isaiah 30, 32 and 36 and 39 we’re told what happens to those who wait for the Lord in contrast to those who follow their own counsel and the counsel of false prophets.

Prophet Isaiah is told by the Lord to write this warning down so that it will be known for eternity,

in a table, and note it in a book,
that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
That this is a rebellious people, lying children,
children that will not hear the law of the Lord …

Isaiah prophesied when the country was under siege,

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel;
In returning and rest shall ye be saved;
in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength:
and ye would not.

But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses;
therefore shall ye flee: and,
We will ride upon the swift;
therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one;
at the rebuke of five shall ye flee:
till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain,
and as an ensign on an hill.

Isaiah told the people that God would save them as long as they promised to trust in Him and repent of their sins. And indeed history tells us that those who fled ended up in BIG trouble and those who heeded the warnings of the prophet and stayed put, quietly praying and trusting in the Lord, were saved.

Prophesy fulfilled

Promises

I reckon that the Bible is the best history book in the world: ‘Wie zich  aan een ander spiegelt, spiegelt zich zacht.’

And the work of righteousness shall be peace;
and the effect of righteousness
quietness and assurance for ever.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation,
and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

And therefore will the Lord wait,
that he may be gracious unto you,
and therefore will he be exalted,
that he may have mercy upon you:
for the Lord is a God of judgment:
blessed are all they that wait for him.

 Or ‘Felix quem faciunt aliena pericula cautum.’ Which is the equivalent of ‘Wise men … learn by others’ harms, fools scarcely by their own ….’ by Benjamin Franklin.

Book review – Mirage by Jeanette Grant-Thomson

Book review

A little while ago I joined the Australian Christian Readers Blog Alliance and I’m excited to let you know about a book on ‘ACRBA tour’ by one of our authors. Her name is Jeanette Grant-Thomson and her book is titled Mirage and printed by Ark House Press.

As soon as I heard about Jeanette’s book I contacted her and asked her if she would be happy to tell us a little bit more about the book and what inspired her to write Mirage. The following is what Jeanette shared with me.

Interview with Author

ME: Hi Jeanette, what inspired you to write a book such as Mirage?

JEANETTE: When someone you know goes away, even dies,  you sometimes think you see her or him in a crowd. Of course, you realise it’s someone else. But one day I thought: what if it really were the person? Someone presumed dead? then I mused on how this might happen.

Having interviewed a lovely, intelligent lady who’d been in a cult, and also having prayed for another friend’s daughter, who had been ensnared by a cult – for her to get out! – I realised this was one way someone could disappear. I was also deeply moved by the story the ex-cult lady told me.

 ME: How long did it take you to write this story from start to finish?

JEANETTE: It took me a couple of years to write. I did a bit of rewriting.

ME: How did the writing emotionally affect you?
JEANETTE: My emotions when writing it? I felt sorry for the heroine, Miriam, and empathised with her feelings because of the lady I’d interviewed. We both wept in the interview.
I got impatient with Miriam’s indecision at times though! I enjoyed creating Bronwyn and Steve her friend and the journalist who does an article on the cult.
ME: Which age group would enjoy reading this book?
JEANETTE: Women of all ages have told me they love Mirage. It is women’s fiction,  or for YA women.
ME: Anything else you would like to share?
JEANETTE: I really hope Mirage will continue to help people to understand the reason cults can suck people in, and to inspire Christians to help them out and back to wholeness.

About the Book

Miraim is desperate. Her mind is a fog of drug-induced forgetfulness. She has forgotten her past, her family, even who she is. But who is the disturbingly familiar girl in the shopping centre?

Enmeshed in Soleternity, a cult in the Queensland outback, Miriam is pregnant. She believes her future – and that of her baby – lies with the cult.

Bronwyn is determined to rescue Miriam. She has not bargained on falling in love with the journalist helping her.

Away from Soleternity, Miriam faces conflicts. Sol . . .Soleternity . . .and now Anna and Christianity. How can she know the truth? Who is to be trusted?

Discount
