24 Scripture Verses just for Parents (2)

1 John 4 tells us that perfect love has no fear. Think about how that frees us up. No need to fear, simply love wholeheartedly with boldness and confidence. God is love, if you experience fear, you’re not expressing God’s love. How wonderful to be laying aside fear, these False Expectations Appearing Real, (FEAR).

Perfect Peace

Perfect Peace Isaiah 26:2-3

This Scripture Verse helps us live in perfect peace. There is only one requirement for those who want to live in perfect peace.
How do we live in perfect peace? By trusting in The Lord. When we trust in The Lord we’ll be in constant communication with him. When we trust in The Lord, we run to Him when we find ourselves or our children in trouble. God’s Word, His love and presence give us constant peace.

There have been many times in my life where my husband was not available because of work obligations, distance and all sorts of reasons.

Whenever I am not sure how to respond to my children’s needs I call to The Lord and He answers, too easy!

Darkness and Light

Darkness and Light are alike to you Psalm 139:2

There have been periods in my life where I travelled through endless dark valleys with seemingly no light on the horizon.
You know, when one day, all of a sudden your children know everything better than you? They have more wisdom, more knowledge, more street smart, or so they think… than their parent.

One moment I am their bestie and they will love me  f o r e v e r . And the next moment I am seen to be the evil witch from hell who  n e v e r  had their best interests at heart.

What happened? It’s called ‘the teenage years.’ We all live through it, parents as well as children, and come out the other end. Don’t despair like I did in my ignorance.
These were dark periods for me because I was unprepared for the sudden change of affection. This Scripture Verse tells me that God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all.

As His child I can live up to that and not be deceived by apparent momentary darkness.

I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.

When all appears dark, look to The Lord, He is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.

In God’s Hand… the breath of all mankind

In God's hand ... the breath of mankind job 12:10

Have you ever been woken up by a reverse charge phone call like this at 11 pm at night? “Mum, I lost my purse and mobile phone and cannot find my way back to my unit.”
I have.

How about, “Mum, I don’t want to live anymore.”
I have.

Or …

OK that’s enough sharing. I’ve had many hair raising calls where I literally feel my heart throbbing in my throat. People tell me that it gets easier when your children get older. Does it? When my children were toddlers I always managed to kiss their pains away and hug them tight and keep them safe.
Now they’re older and can get themselves into real trouble out in the big wide world, now what?

This is when I remember that everyone’s life is in God’s hand, not mine. Phew, that’s a load of my mind.
Amen, thank you Lord. It is not my job to keep other adults safe and alive:

In God’s hand is the soul of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

Thank you Father!

Always Pray

Always pray, not to faint Luke 18:1-8

“But they promised Mum, they said they would give me the promotion.”
“He promised to repay the money.”
“My horse trailer was stolen right under my eyes.”
“I worked so very hard to get and keep this job, how can they cancel the contract?”

So much unfairness and what can we do to shield our children from this? Other than raise them well and make sure that they’ll do the right thing by others… not much usually.

Hold on. How about we use the tried and trusted, most effective method of all? Prayer! Always pray, not to faint. When this unjust judge wouldn’t give this lady what she was entitled to, she continued hassling and bothering this judge till he gave in.

If an unjust judge eventually delivers justice… how much more will our Heavenly Father hear us and deliver justice to His people?

The tree is known by its fruit

The tree is known by its fruit Matthew 12:33

Either make the tree good, and his fruit good;
or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt:
for the tree is known by his fruit.

Set the right example for your children. It is as simple as that.

Submit to God

Submit to God resist the devil James 4:7

“I cannot help it Mum.”

” I keep doing the wrong thing by people and I don’t want to.”

“I don’t know what made me do this.”

Yes, you do.Your behaviour is caused by an attitude of laziness and ‘I cannot be bothered’ and ‘finding an easy way out’ and ‘this works for me.”

Don’t try to confuse me with conflicting messages. If you genuinely want to do the right thing by people and struggle to do so, I suggest that you pray over it and ask for help.

If you genuinely think that you cannot stop yourself ftom doing the wrong thing by people, you pray for a change of attitude. Go, see a therapist, read some books, follow a course, take supplements, improve your attitude with the help of The Lord, family, friends, therapists and health professionals.

All actions that involve lying, cheating, stealing, damaging other people’s property, hurting their soul, heart and spirit can easily be avoided.
How?

Submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Thank you Father for chasing all spirits of laziness, hatred and liars out of my family. Thank you for chasing these foul spirits out of my children as well as me.

The Lord bless thee

The Lord bless you Numbers 6:23-27

Do you ask God to bless your children daily? It is a good idea.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,  Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

God made me laugh

God made me laugh Genesis 21:16

The Lord blessed Sarah and Abraham with a child after she had turned 90 years old!

What is there not to laugh about? If we ever wondered if our Heavenly Father is able to grant us our request… wonder no more. Sarah received a child from the Lord when she was already a very old woman. She said that God made her laugh. Amen to that.

God made me laugh too.

No greater joy…

No greater joy ... 3 John 1:4

What is the greatest joy in life? To have children? No, it is to have our children walk in God’s Word, in The Truth. The greatest joy is to know that our children do the right thing by others and serve the Lord wherever they go with a smile on their face.

And on that note, we are to teach our children.

Teach your children

Teach your children Deuternoomy 6:4-9

Teach our children what? Teach our children God’s Word.

On a regular basis, preferably daily, we sit down and read God’s Word and sing Scripture Songs to remind us of God’s goodness and keep us on the straight and narrow.

It shows our innocence if we carefully keep all these commandments as God requires from us.

My spirit that is upon you

My spirit that is upon you Isaiah 59:20-23

The Lord made an agreement with us that, if we agree to be part of his posse, His spirit will be on our mouth (words) as well as on the mouth (words) of our children.

Thank you Father for your Spirit being with us continuously.

My daughters who loves me

Thy daughter in law which loveth thee Ruth 4:15

The story of Ruth in the Bible tells us about a lady who lived a pretty tough life. Her daughter in law stuck with her, and proved to be a life saver to her.

I LOVE these examples in the Bible of what is possible. I love the promises that are available to us when we live according to God’s directions.  Naomi suffered much but her daughter in law took care of her and proved to be better to her than seven sons.

I have my own version of this, which makes me feel very blessed indeed:
“My daughters who love me, are better to me than seven sons each.”

Amen, praise The Lord!

24 Scripture Verses that help with parenting

My friend Jacob’s story

A good friend of mine passed away recently. His parents named him after the Biblical patriarch Jacob. You can find the story of Jacob the patriarch in Genesis 25 to 35.

My friend Jacob grew up in a small town in Germany. Jacob’s wife did not believe in God. Every time that I heard his wife speak about The Lord in a derogatory tone, Jacob would tell this story.

He would say, “Mimi, let me tell you about my Mum.”

“All young fellows in my town were recruited to fight in the (second world) war. None of us wanted to go but we weren’t given a choice.

My Mum said to me; “You’ll be right son, trust in The Lord.”

To be honest I cannot remember if I always said my prayers, there was so much happening. But I trusted in The Lord.
One by one I saw my mates around me perish. It was the most awful time in my life.

Out of 23 young lads that left our village, how many do you think returned home after the war?”

I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders, didn’t dare hazard a guess.

“Just me.” He said. “Just me, I was the only one that came back home whole.”

What could I say? I said, “Wow.”

Then he would look at me and say, “You know, my Mum prayed for me every single day that I would return home safely. I was gone for three years and every single day she prayed for me.

I’m not saying that the other Mum’s didn’t pray cause I don’t know about that. But I know for sure that my Mum prayed for me, every single day. I was the only one that came back home in one piece.”

He would then nod, shake his head, nod again and mumble under his breath, “I’m just saying.”

I like Jacob’s story. The Biblical one as well as my friend’s story. Both are stories of great faith.

Patriarch Jacob hung on to his faith in situations where it would have been easy to throw in the towel.
My friend Jacob also kept his faith in situations of great adversity. First, during the war and later also during his marriage with a wife who was hostile towards His God.

I never heard him oppose his wife but he spoke about his faith often.

Jacob’s story demonstrates to me that God is good and hears prayer.

Raising children in difficult situations

Some children are easier to raise than others. But most parents despair every now and then, wondering if it will all turn out for good. Jacob’s Mum unexpectedly had to hand her teenage son over to authorities who placed him in life threatening situations, again and again. What was she to do?  She couldn’t go with her son to protect him. So she prayed. I dare say that she did not pray every single day, but that she prayed throughout every single day and put her trust in The Lord.

Jacob’s Mum was not disappointed when she put her trust in The Lord.

I have never been disappointed either. Disappointed with my impatience, sure.
But disappointed in The Lord? Never!

Parents are people too

Parents are people too. Where did (and do) I find my strength when the children and I don’t agree on major issues such as house rules, work, health, contributions etc? Or when they insist on having it their way, when maturity versus immaturity turns ugly? Or when they go out into society and bring home devilish attitudes?

I’ve discovered that it is good practice to pray for the health and wellbeing of my children and family daily.

All throughout the Bible we’re told that God hears prayer and responds to our prayers.

Below I list some Scripture Verses that have helped me over the years whilst raising my children. These are not just Scripture Verses to pray over my children but this is God’s Word speaking encouragement and hope to parents.

God’s Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. There are hundreds of Scripture Verses that encourage and strengthen me with whatever I do and wherever I go.

I selected some verses for parents needing encouragement. Who parents the parent?

God’s Holy Word for Parents

GOD'S HOLY WORD FOR PARENTS 24 VERSES

When your parents are not there ‘anymore’ to take care of you, the promise is that the Lord will take us up and teach us His way.

There are many Scripture Verses that are applicable for parenting and the following were specifically chosen for parents who feel challenged as they parent their children.

Godly Offspring

God's Holy Word for Parents Malachi 2:15

Pick your partner well. Pray over it.
Read Malachi 2 to understand that, The man who hates and divorces his wife, does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty.

So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.

I grew up in the flower power era. The word unfaithful did not even exist in those days.

God does not like it when people have affairs, move from one to the other and so on. He’s after Godly offspring. If you end up with not so Godly offspring you may be severely challenged whilst you’re raising your children.

For This Child I Prayed

Scripture Verses for Parents 1 Samuel 1:27-28

The Bible gives many examples of childless couples. In all the instances mentioned, after prayer, the women became pregnant. If God gives children to couples who ask for this, how much more will He help you to take care of this child? Think about it. You want a child, here it is. “You’re on your own now?” No, of course not.
Ask away because the Lord hears prayer and He will help you.

“Thank you Father, for helping me raise my child. Thank you for hearing my prayer, so that I can sleep soundly.”

Hannah’s prayer reminds me of the goodness of God and how children do not belong to us but to our Father.

You wove me in my Mother’s Womb

God's Holy Word for Parents Psalm 129:13

It is God who made us and our children. Clearly He knows me and my children better than I do myself.  Think about it… The heart, the veins, the bones, the flesh, the other organs, the hair, eyes, mouth, ears, nose and the spirit. God created all of this. He knows all about my children in a way that I cannot even imagine.
Thank you Lord!

For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well …

Children are a heritage from the Lord

God's Holy Word for Parents Psalm 127:3

As I said before, children belong to The Lord.  A heritage, made in his image.

“Father, these children that I received from you, that are made in your image, they feel like a gift indeed and my life is so much richer because of them. As I grow alongside them and am becoming more patient, kind and compassionate, can you please help me correct whatever needs correcting in myself as well as my children?”

A Good Future

God's Holy Word for Parents Jeremiah 9:11

God’s Holy Word promises us a good future.
I never have had any preconceived ideas as to what I expect my children to do in life, for a job or relationship or whatever.

Together we plan according to the talents we were given. And all throughout our lives we’ve had ample opportunities to contribute to society in a meaningful way, whilst utilising our talents and following our passions.

I trust in the Lord for a good future for both my children and myself.

… of such is the Kingdom of Heaven

Matthew 19:14 Let the little children come to me

My Mum told me all the ‘Jesus’ stories’ from a very young age. I knew about all His miracles and parables before I even went to kindergarten. I’ve loved Jesus as long as I can remember because of my Mum’s love for Him.
Don’t deny your children because … of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.

I found great joy and pleasure in listening to those stories from an early age and sharing these with my children from the moment they were born.
Don’t allow anyone to refuse your children access to Jesus.

Talk to your children on a daily basis about our Father in Heaven and his Son Jesus.

Walk humbly with The Lord

Walk humbly Micah 6:8

It is never too early to tell your children what God expects of them.

What does the Lord require of all of us? To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

I don’t know about your children, but mine sure know all the right buttons to press to get me up and going and as such I have occasionally said things that I regret.
Don’t act in anger, but keep in mind when dealing with your children to always treat them justly, with mercy as you walk humbly with your God.

Honour your parents

Honour your parents Exodus 20:12

Honour your parents. Teach your children from an early age that they are to respect their elders. If you fail to do so, you’ll only have yourself to blame if they don’t obey you when they should.

Not only that. But if you don’t instil respect for authority in your children, you are neglecting this very important commandment and both you and your children will suffer as a result.

In the Bible, in the old days, Jewish families were encouraged to dob in their children if they were gluttons and drunks. This behaviour was considered so evil that the tribe wanted to get rid of these wayward kids altogether. I do not encourage this (God says, ‘Do not kill’), but these verses give us some perspective on what people of old expected of their children.

Nowadays we run to doctors and stand ready with pills and therapies if our precious ones ‘don’t behave.’ In those days, they were told to behave or thrown out of the tribe.

It is reasonable to expect respect and obedience from our children.

Keep His Commandments

Keep His Commandments Psalm 78:5-7

On that note, set house rules for your children. Give them clear guidelines to live by when at home as well as when out in the world.

If you know any better moral guidelines to live by than God’s Commandments, you can let me know about it. Till then, I tell my children to live by God’s Ten Commandments which are clearly spelled out in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 and  summed up as,

‘Love each other and do unto others, as you like them to do unto you.’

It is well. It shall be well.

It is well 2 Kings 4

Every now and then we all throw up our hands and are close to giving up. I should speak for myself here but, honestly I cannot count the times, where I thought, “Enough already, how much can a person take?”

This has happened with ill health and also with rebellious kids to the point where it appears as if they’re dead (to me), because I’ve exhausted all options and all that’s left for me to do, is cry to The Lord. I may not always have done the right things and as such believe that I deserve what I get, however God’s Word tells me that I have an advocate, Jesus who atoned for my sins.

Reality does not always match God’s Truth. Quite a while ago now I decided to speak out God’s Truth over the life of my children and myself. There have been many times that God’s Word pulled me through, and Scripture Verses such as this one comforted me and helped me over the rough patches.

The Bible tells the story of this ‘Great Woman, a Shunnamite.’ She was childless and received a child from God because of the kindness she had shown to one of his Prophets. When the child died, she did not break down and start wailing.
When people asked her, if all was OK, she responded with, “It shall be well.” She continued to say, “It is well,” till she saw the prophet and then ‘demanded’ that he would take care of the situation.

And Elisha, the prophet took care of it for her. He prayed to The Lord on her behalf and her child was brought back to life.
How do I apply this Scripture Verse to life? When everything is getting on top of me and seemingly too much to handle, I give it to The Lord and believe and say, “It’s all good.”

Sure, every now and then I may despair about a situation but I usually catch myself and remember this ‘Great Woman.’ Her child had died and she said, “It shall be well.” And it was. Her faith was rewarded.

Jesus said, “Be of good cheer,’ and I say Amen to that.

I will help thee

I will help thee Isaiah 41:10

No matter what I face in life, God is with me. He is with my children. Our Father will help me, He will help my children. There is no need to fear anything because the Lord is there; the promise is that He is with me and will help me.

I believe this promise with all my heart and this is what I have experienced also throughout my life. Sometimes I need to remind myself of this, because during the hustle and bustle of life I get distracted.

It is my job as a Mum to remind myself and my children on a daily basis that there is no need to fear anything because God is with us and will help us.

There is no fear in Love

There is no fear in love John 4:18

Some people are easier to love than others. Throughout the generations there have been people in my family who like to have us walk on eggshells around them, and for too many years I have. The thinly veiled threats can vary between, “I won’t like you if you cook anything other than my favourite dish” and, “If you upset me, or dare reprimand or oppose me, you may never see me again.”
I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve bought into this for far too long and yielded and gave in and adjusted my behaviour to please those that insist on never being satisfied with any situation.

I’ve finally learned to, not only understand, but also live according to God’s promises and guidelines. One of the most powerful Scripture Verses in the Bible teaches us that,

Love has in it no element of fear; but perfect love drives away fear, because fear involves pain, and if a man gives way to fear, there is something imperfect in his love. Weymouth New Testament

Living according to these verses can make all the difference in your life.

Dear Father I choose never again to have another fearful relationship and from now on I will only maintain and cultivate loving relationships. This is how I will set the right example for my children.

Don’t give way to fear. Whatever your loved ones threaten you with: Don’t act or re-act out of fear when you engage with them. Instead act with love.

There is no fear in perfect love.

The above twelve Scripture Verses helped me much when raising my children.

Thank you to my friend Kathi who encouraged me to have a look at what God’s Word says about raising children.

Grocery list

FORWARDED MESSAGE

about the power of prayer

I received the ‘GROCERY LIST’ as a forwarded message and thought to post it here because it gave me food for thought with regards to the power of prayer and the weight we give to it.
SQ Helper set 24
Thank you to the kind friend who forwarded this message to me.

GROCERY LIST

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries.
She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.
John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once.
Visualizing the family needs, she said: ‘Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.’
John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.
Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, ‘Do you have a grocery list?’
Louise replied, ‘Yes sir.’ ‘O.K’ he said, ‘put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.’
Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.
The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.
The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, ‘I can’t believe it.’
The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.
The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.
It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:
‘Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.’
The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence.
Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; ‘It was worth every penny of it. Only God knows the weight of a prayer.’
After you’ve read this, say a prayer of thanks for all your blessings. That’s all you have to do.
Peace and Blessings… In God we trust!
Praise God, He is All Merciful.

Which Bible to read?

We all have our favourites and below I’ll share mine with you.

I think that any Bible is better than no Bible and the following Bibles are just a guideline and a few of my favourite Bibles and books from my bookshelf as well as links to some of my favourite sites.

Jewish Bible

JEWISH BIBLE

Jewish Bibles don’t contain the gospels and other books from the New Testament but it is good to  remember that the Jewish Bible (re-labeled Old Testament by Christianity) is the authority on the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with GOD. Jesus is of Jewish heritage that is traced all the way back to King David’s lineage. Jesus’ teachings are based on the Jewish Bible and He quotes extensively from the Scripture from the prophets of old.

JPS Hebrew-English

The JPS Hebrew-English Tanakah is an obvious choice because it has the Hebrew verses alongside the English translation.

King James Life Application Study Bible

LASB

For beginners, I like the King James version Life Application Study Bible from Tyndale House Publications because it has handy commentary on each page. And even though I don’t necessarily agree with all the commentary, overall for beginners the commentary is helpful to understand events in the  context of the history and culture of the Jewish nation.

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible

STRONGS

Strong’s Concordance contains a Hebrew and Aramaic Dictionary of the Jewish Bible (named Old Testament by Christians) and a Greek Dictionary of the New Testament. It is truly exhaustive because every word and every reference in the King James version is indexed. I like this version because it has slightly larger print.

The Brown-Driver-Bridges Hebrew and English Lexikon.

BROWN DRIVER LEXIKON

The Lexikon provides not only dictionary definitions for each word, but it relates to how each word is used in the Old Testament, and it categorises the nuances of meaning for each word.

Interlinear Greek-English New Testament

THE INETERLINEAR

The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament by Jay P. Green claims to be the only complete interlinear Bible available in English. It is keyed to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. It contains the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word as well as the Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. It’s a lot of fun, this one!

Young’s Literal Translation

YOUNGS LITERAL

The Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible is another of my favourites. I really like the language of Young’s Literal because it is a strictly literal translation of the original Hebrew and Greek texts.

Various King James versions

I started off with an authorised 1611 translation of the King James Bible and an original version. At the moment, I use an authorised King James Version copyright 1984 by the Zondervan Corporation.

The Oxford Annotated Apocrypha

OXFORD

I also have in my library the Oxford Annotated Apocrypha.  I enjoyed reading  the Apocrypha. The word Apocrypha means hidden and generally contains 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, the Rest of Esther, the Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, (also titled Ecclesiasticus), Barach, The Letter of Jeremiah, Song of the Three Young Men, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, The Additions to Daniel, The Prayer of Manasseh, and 1 and 2 Maccabees which were written by Jewish people between 300 and 100 B.C.

The books accepted as inspired that are included in the Catholic Bible are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach (also known as Ecclesiasticus), and Baruch.

It is my understanding that Jewish people don’t recognise these books as being canonical. I don’t think that Jesus or the apostles ever quoted from the apocryphal books.

E Sword

For many years I used the free Bible software eSword and was very happy with this. At some stage I switched to a mac and couldn’t get used to the online mac version of esword. I now have both mac as well as PC and intend to start using eSword again.

I own a small electronic device by Franklin which facilitates the finding of Bible verses. Nowadays with the smart phones it should be easy enough to find any Bible reference on a smart phone.

To understand Scripture better

NEHEMIA

To understand Scripture better we listen to Biblical scholar Nehemia Gordon when he interviews ‘Hebrew Voices.’ Nehemia is a Karaite Jew and what I like about Karaite Judaism  or Karaism (also spelt Qaraite Judaism or Qaraism), (/ˈkærə.aɪt/ or /ˈkærə.ɪzəm/; Hebrew: יהדות קראית), is that it means, “Readers of the Hebrew Scriptures.” Kataite Judaism is a Jewish movement characterized by the recognition of the Tanakh alone as its supreme legal authority.
This practice is similar to my belief of Sola Scripture, where God’s Word, and not a religious leader, denomination or church, is considered the authority.

Free Scripture Card – Z – Zion heard and was glad

Zion heard and was glad

Zion heard and was glad

The quote on this Scripture Card tells us to be glad that God is in charge because He will not fail nor be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth.

Psalm 97

 The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice;
let the multitude of isles be glad thereof
.
Clouds and darkness are round about him:
righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
Confounded be all they that serve graven images,
that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

Zion heard, and was glad;
and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O Lord.

For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth:
thou art exalted far above all gods.

Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints;
he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous;
and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Free Scripture Card – Y – Your Word is a lamp unto my feet

Apologies to readers who received the draft version of this post last week. Let’s blame the goblins in my computer for it.

A lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

The Scripture Verse quoted above is from one of my favourite psalms in the Bible. Psalm 119 is the longest psalm as well as the longest chapter in the Bible.  Psalm 119 can be found smack bam in the middle of the Bible and the whole psalm relates to the truth, power and energy of GOD’s Word and how we can benefit by following and sticking to GOD’s Holy Word and law. Because it is such a wonderful psalm I’ve copied and pasted all of it below courtesy of Bible Gateway.

Psalm 119

119:1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.

Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.

O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!

Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.

I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.

13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

17 Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.

18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.

20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments.

22 Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.

23 Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.

24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.

25 My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

26 I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.

27 Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

28 My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

29 Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.

30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

31 I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O Lord, put me not to shame.

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.

40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.

41 Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word.

42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.

44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.

45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.

47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

49 Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.

52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O Lord; and have comforted myself.

53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

55 I have remembered thy name, O Lord, in the night, and have kept thy law.

56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

57 Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.

58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.

59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.

61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.

62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.

65 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according unto thy word.

66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.

68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.

69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.

70 Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.

71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.

75 I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.

76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.

79 Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies.

80 Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

81 My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

82 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

83 For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

84 How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?

85 The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law.

86 All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.

87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.

88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

89 For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

94 I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts.

95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

96 I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O Lord, according unto thy word.

108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, and teach me thy judgments.

109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.

110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.

111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.

115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

117 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

118 Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.

119 Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

121 I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors.

122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me.

123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.

124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes.

125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

126 It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law.

127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

129 Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.

130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.

132 Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.

133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.

135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.

136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.

137 Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.

138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful.

139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.

140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.

141 I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts.

142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.

144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.

145 I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes.

146 I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.

147 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O Lord, quicken me according to thy judgment.

150 They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law.

151 Thou art near, O Lord; and all thy commandments are truth.

152 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

153 Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.

156 Great are thy tender mercies, O Lord: quicken me according to thy judgments.

157 Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies.

158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.

159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O Lord, according to thy lovingkindness.

160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

161 Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.

162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.

164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

166 Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.

167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.

168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

169 Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word.

170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.

171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.

172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight.

175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Great Peace

What I share with the author of this psalm, which by many scholars is thought to be King David, is the love for GOD’s Word and law. This psalm highlights the valuable instruction we receive by following GOD’s guidelines and direction.

By reading this psalm we learn that those who walk in GOD’s law are blessed and find the way of mercies, life, truth and salvation. We find out that sorrow may get us closer to GOD and the author tells us that GOD’s law is more valuable than gold and silver. GOD’s Word is forever settled in heaven. The author of Psalm 119 is convinced that, if it were not for GOD’s law, the author would have perished.

Believing in and following GOD’s Commandments gives people understanding and makes them wiser than their enemies, their teachers and wiser than the ancients. Following GOD’s Word causes a joyous heart, and hoping in His Word provides us with light, a hiding place and a shield. GOD’s Word is pure, righteous and His law and commandments are the truth.

Psalm 119 tells us that; Great peace have they which love GOD’s law.

All about love

We now have an epic post to which I will add a little more. What’s GOD’s law all about?  It’s all about love. Click on the next post to find out what makes me say that GOD’s law is all about love.
