Free Scripture Card – Z – Zion heard and was glad

Zion heard and was glad

Zion heard and was glad

The quote on this Scripture Card tells us to be glad that God is in charge because He will not fail nor be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth.

Psalm 97

 The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice;
let the multitude of isles be glad thereof
.
Clouds and darkness are round about him:
righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
Confounded be all they that serve graven images,
that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

Zion heard, and was glad;
and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O Lord.

For thou, Lord, art high above all the earth:
thou art exalted far above all gods.

Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints;
he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous;
and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Free Scripture Card – Y – Your Word is a lamp unto my feet

Apologies to readers who received the draft version of this post last week. Let’s blame the goblins in my computer for it.

A lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

The Scripture Verse quoted above is from one of my favourite psalms in the Bible. Psalm 119 is the longest psalm as well as the longest chapter in the Bible.  Psalm 119 can be found smack bam in the middle of the Bible and the whole psalm relates to the truth, power and energy of GOD’s Word and how we can benefit by following and sticking to GOD’s Holy Word and law. Because it is such a wonderful psalm I’ve copied and pasted all of it below courtesy of Bible Gateway.

Psalm 119

119:1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.

Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.

O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!

Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.

I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.

13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

17 Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.

18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.

20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments.

22 Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies.

23 Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.

24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.

25 My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

26 I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.

27 Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

28 My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.

29 Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.

30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

31 I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O Lord, put me not to shame.

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.

37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.

40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.

41 Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word.

42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.

44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.

45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.

47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

49 Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.

52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O Lord; and have comforted myself.

53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

55 I have remembered thy name, O Lord, in the night, and have kept thy law.

56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

57 Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.

58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.

59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.

61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.

62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.

65 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according unto thy word.

66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.

68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.

69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.

70 Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law.

71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.

75 I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.

76 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

77 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

78 Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.

79 Let those that fear thee turn unto me, and those that have known thy testimonies.

80 Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

81 My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

82 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

83 For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

84 How many are the days of thy servant? when wilt thou execute judgment on them that persecute me?

85 The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law.

86 All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me.

87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.

88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

89 For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

94 I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts.

95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

96 I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O Lord, according unto thy word.

108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, and teach me thy judgments.

109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.

110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.

111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.

115 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

116 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

117 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

118 Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.

119 Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.

120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

121 I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors.

122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me.

123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.

124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes.

125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

126 It is time for thee, Lord, to work: for they have made void thy law.

127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

129 Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.

130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.

132 Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.

133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.

134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.

135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.

136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.

137 Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.

138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful.

139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.

140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.

141 I am small and despised: yet do not I forget thy precepts.

142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.

144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.

145 I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes.

146 I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.

147 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O Lord, quicken me according to thy judgment.

150 They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law.

151 Thou art near, O Lord; and all thy commandments are truth.

152 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

153 Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.

156 Great are thy tender mercies, O Lord: quicken me according to thy judgments.

157 Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies.

158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.

159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O Lord, according to thy lovingkindness.

160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

161 Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.

162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.

164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

166 Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.

167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.

168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

169 Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word.

170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.

171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.

172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

174 I have longed for thy salvation, O Lord; and thy law is my delight.

175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Great Peace

What I share with the author of this psalm, which by many scholars is thought to be King David, is the love for GOD’s Word and law. This psalm highlights the valuable instruction we receive by following GOD’s guidelines and direction.

By reading this psalm we learn that those who walk in GOD’s law are blessed and find the way of mercies, life, truth and salvation. We find out that sorrow may get us closer to GOD and the author tells us that GOD’s law is more valuable than gold and silver. GOD’s Word is forever settled in heaven. The author of Psalm 119 is convinced that, if it were not for GOD’s law, the author would have perished.

Believing in and following GOD’s Commandments gives people understanding and makes them wiser than their enemies, their teachers and wiser than the ancients. Following GOD’s Word causes a joyous heart, and hoping in His Word provides us with light, a hiding place and a shield. GOD’s Word is pure, righteous and His law and commandments are the truth.

Psalm 119 tells us that; Great peace have they which love GOD’s law.

All about love

We now have an epic post to which I will add a little more. What’s GOD’s law all about?  It’s all about love. Click on the next post to find out what makes me say that GOD’s law is all about love.

Free Scripture Card – X – Become as little children

eXcept ye be converted and become as little children

Become as little children

Become as little children

Become as little children if you want to  enter the kingdom of heaven. What does that mean?

The little children I know are full of enthusiasm, filled with wonder and without pre-conceived ideas about how things should be. Most little children I know take things at face value. Reading this verse in context is as follows:

In context

At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying,
Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

And Jesus called a little child unto him,
and set him in the midst of them,

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted,
and become as little children,
ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child,
the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me,
it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck,
and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Jesus’ disciples wondered who would be considered the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said that unless his disciples would become as little children, they had no hope to enter the kingdom of heaven.

The very fact that his disciples concerned themselves with ‘who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven,’ indicates that, at that time, they lacked the humility required to enter. A little child generally is not concerned with who will be the most powerful sometime in the future. Jesus answered that the most humble among them will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus continued and said that whosoever shall receive a humble and innocent person in Jesus name, will also be acknowledged by Him.

Warning

It has been written that “Worldly people are more clever than spiritually-minded people when it comes to dealing with others.”

Have you found that people are taking advantage of your trusting nature and your generosity? This could indicate that you may be on the right path. Because we are taught to be as little children. This does not mean that you ever should allow people to mistreat you.

But the message is to keep our heart soft and wide open and not worry too much about people who abuse your good nature.

The warning in these verses is for people who offend (new) believers. They are told to be careful not to offend unassuming souls who follow Jesus … “it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

I apologise for the cheeky X. If you can show me another Scripture verse with a better X, I would love to hear from  you.

24 Powerful Bible Promises – Free Scripture Card – W –

Wait on the Lord, be of good courage and He’ll strengthen thine heart.

Wait on the Lord, be of good courage

Action required

Many of the promises in the bible require some action for them to be fulfilled. At all times it is a good idea to wait on the Lord and be of good courage because the promise is that our heart will be strengthened in doing so.

The above Scripture quote was taken from Psalm 27 and the author of this Psalm is King David. King David experienced many problems throughout his life; some self-imposed and other problems not of his own doing.  Just like most of his.

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.
Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path …

Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies …

I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the Lord.

King David had servants and armies to help him out, yet he said that he would have fainted if it wasn’t for his faith in the Lord, and it was the Lord he called upon when he was in a tight spot.

God hears prayer

I absolutely love this particular verse because I used to think that I have to sort all my troubles myself. Eventually life took me to such tight spots where I realised that I cannot sort everything out myself.

The other day I told one of my nearest and dearest that if the problem seems too big or too hard, Our Father in Heaven loves to hear about it.

“Relax,” I said, “God hears all prayer and I cannot think of one request that has not been answered for me.”

My loved one shot back at me with, “God has given you a brain to think for yourself, aren’t we supposed to be using this brain to sort out our own problems?”
Good comeback and I totally agree. Whenever there is any kind of problem, I do whatever I can to sort this myself or with the help of others. Sometimes, however, mere human effort does not seem to cut it. Those are the times that I am super grateful that My Creator has blessed me with a brain that is able to discern which problems to sort out myself and which problems to hand over to Him who knows and sees all. Meanwhile I just pray my little heart out.

24 Powerful Promises

I love all the promises, the words are so powerful. And the reality for me in my life is that all God’s promises are being fulfilled always. Whenever I call upon the Lord I get an answer. That’s why I am so keen to share because, before I started reading God’s Word and relying on His promises my success rate was very much a hit and miss affair. I explained in an earlier post why positive thinking does not work for me.

I’ll share some of my favourite Bible promises. You can let me know what your favourite promises are in the comments below.

Till Heaven and Earth pass …

Verily, verily ... Till heaven and earth pass

Wat does this Scripture Verse mean?

To understand what this Verse means we need to understand what a jot and a tittle is. A jot (in Greek) or yod (in Hebrew) is the smallest letter in the alphabet. And the tittle is the smallest accent or quotation mark used.

In context

When Jesus gave his famous Sermon on the Mount he addressed many of the misconceptions which had been floating around with regards to how people were supposed to be following the law.

“I came not to destroy the law.”

Jesus made it very clear that he had not come to earth to destroy the law; he came to uphold it and show people how it is supposed to be done. In him is no sin.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets:
I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

For verily I say unto you,
Till heaven and earth pass,
one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
till all be fulfilled.

Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments,
and shall teach men so,
he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven:
but whosoever shall do and teach them,
the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

For I say unto you,
That except your righteousness shall exceed
the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees,
ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus said, ‘Don’t even break the smallest of the Commandments if you don’t want to get into trouble.’

Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. Free Scripture Card – U –

Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

I trust in thee

Let me not be ashamed

Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
O my God, I trust in thee:
let me not be ashamed,
let not mine enemies triumph over me.
Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed:
let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.

Easy to read version of the Bible translates as follows:

Lord, I put my life in your hands.
I trust in you, my God,
and I will not be disappointed.
My enemies will not laugh at me.
No one who trusts in you will be disappointed.
But disappointment will come to those who try to deceive others.
    They will get nothing.

Take no thought for tomorrow, free Scripture Card – T –

Take no thought for tomorrow …

Take no thought for tomorrow

In His Sermon on the Mount Jesus explains how lilies grow and birds are taken care of without worrying about tomorrow because their Creator is taking care of them.

Jesus tells us not to worry about tomorrow because our Father knows our needs and will take care of them as long as we seek Him and His righteousness first.

That works just fine for me.

Somewhere in my library I have a sweet little ditty about not worrying. I’ll dig it up and will share it with you as soon as I find it.

Free Scripture Card – S – Seek and ye shall find

Seek and ye shall find

Seek and ye shall findThe whole scripture verse reads in Matthew 7:7-8,

Ask and it shall be given you

Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth;
and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Most of us have stories where we cry out to God and he hears us. I have plenty. One of my recent ‘prayers answered‘ is when a massive truck deposited a humongous load of soil on my drive. Yeah! Organic veggie feast! Not quite yet, but hopefully soon!

Seeking to stay alive

I recently finished writing my story of survival. After I ruptured my appendix, the doctors in the emergency room decided against operating on me; convinced that the odds were stacked against me. So yes, I’ve been searching all right: seeking to stay alive and searching to regain my health and to keep on going against all odds. Click here if you like good endings. The book is free.

Rejoice in the Lord

Rejoice in the Lord. Free Scripture Card – R –

Rejoice in the Lord.

Rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation says the prophet who wrote the Book of Habakkuk approximately 612-589 B.C.

I like the Book of Habakkuk and I’ll tell you why.

Rejoice in the Lord

Habakkuk questions

Why do evil people seem to prosper?

Habakkuk’s name means ‘to embrace’ or ‘wrestle.’ Prophet Habakkuk wrestles with the question, Why is there so much evil in the world? And why does it seemingly go unpunished and not only that. But why do the evil people seem to prosper? Prophet Habakkuk has many questions like this and he puts them to the Lord.

The answer comes back loud and clear that the people referred to by prophet Habakkuk are arrogant and proud with inflated ego’s. Habakkuk was told by the Lord that the proud, the greedy, the idolaters and warmongers will all enjoy the fruit of their doings. But those who genuinely follow the Lord. they are the ones who have faith in Him and rejoice in the Lord, cause He will save them!

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him:
but the righteous shall live by his faith.

Who are the righteous?

Those who faithfully keep my laws, live by their faith

The righteous shall live by his faith. Who are the righteous? According to the bible the righteous, or ‘just’ as they are also called, are those who follow God’s rules and laws. They are the ones who are promised life and salvation.

He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws.
That man is righteous; he will surely live,
declares the Sovereign LORD.

God decides everything

Why do I like the book of Habakkuk so much? Because I’ve often been surrounded by people who mock my religion and my faith. I know plenty people who know better than to ‘believe.’ Why would they? They are comfortable in their big houses and with multiple cars and holidays and plenty money to throw around. They believe in their wealth and comfort and have faith in their own ability to produce whatever their heart desires. This is because these people haven’t as yet realised that it is God who decides  e v e r y t h i n g.

I used to be a little bit like that too. Not a lot because I never had stacks to throw around but always enough.

Otherwise seemingly devout people often insist that the above scripture verses indicate that ‘faith’ on its own will get us there. What?

The scripture verses above indicate that ‘just’ behaviour is followed by faith; and not the other way around, as many would have you believe. Why does this matter? It matters because it is an arrogant stance to take to think that just faith is sufficient, as we will see below.

The Lord is my strength

Be not deceived. The above scripture verses make it clear that it is those who ‘faithfully’ follow God’s directions and make an effort to live according to his laws are the ones referred to. The ‘righteous’ shall live by his faith.

I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will joy in the God of my salvation.
The Lord God is my strength …

Faith is a product of righteous living.

That is why I like the Book of Habakkuk. In one swoop Habakkuk deals not only with people living carelessly and proudly without  having much regard for the people around them but he also deals with those pretending to be ‘devout.’ In addition he sets straight the people who lead others astray by saying that just faith is enough.

Faith without works is dead

Habakkuk tells us that faith is a product of righteous living and not the other way around. This is reiterated in the Book of James as below,

What doth it profit, my brethren,
though a man say he hath faith,
and have not works?
can faith save him?

Even so faith, if it hath not works,
is dead, being alone.

Thou believest that there is one God;
thou doest well:
the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man,
that faith without works is dead?

by works a man is justified,
and not by faith only.

For as the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without works is dead also.

Isaiah 30:14-16 In Quietness and rest shall ye be saved

In Quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. Free Scripture Card – Q –

In Quietness and in confidence shall be your strength

For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

Isaiah 30:14-16 In Quietness and rest shall ye be saved

What does this mean?

What does that mean, ‘In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength ..?’

It means that whenever you experience turmoil in your life, your best bet is not to put your confidence in man but pray and trust in the Lord. History tells us to heed God’s warnings.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God makes an extra-ordinary prophesy to the Jewish people under siege and they are told, not to collaborate with other nations, not to run. But instead to return to the LORD.

These Scripture verses in Isaiah are a warning of what happens when we don’t follow God’s guidance and at the same time these Scripture verses are a wonderful reminder of God’s promises and the benefits which flow from obedience.

Warnings

In Isaiah 30, 32 and 36 and 39 we’re told what happens to those who wait for the Lord in contrast to those who follow their own counsel and the counsel of false prophets.

Prophet Isaiah is told by the Lord to write this warning down so that it will be known for eternity,

in a table, and note it in a book,
that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
That this is a rebellious people, lying children,
children that will not hear the law of the Lord …

Isaiah prophesied when the country was under siege,

For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel;
In returning and rest shall ye be saved;
in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength:
and ye would not.

But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses;
therefore shall ye flee: and,
We will ride upon the swift;
therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one;
at the rebuke of five shall ye flee:
till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain,
and as an ensign on an hill.

Isaiah told the people that God would save them as long as they promised to trust in Him and repent of their sins. And indeed history tells us that those who fled ended up in BIG trouble and those who heeded the warnings of the prophet and stayed put, quietly praying and trusting in the Lord, were saved.

Prophesy fulfilled

Promises

I reckon that the Bible is the best history book in the world: ‘Wie zich  aan een ander spiegelt, spiegelt zich zacht.’

And the work of righteousness shall be peace;
and the effect of righteousness
quietness and assurance for ever.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation,
and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

And therefore will the Lord wait,
that he may be gracious unto you,
and therefore will he be exalted,
that he may have mercy upon you:
for the Lord is a God of judgment:
blessed are all they that wait for him.

Or ‘Felix quem faciunt aliena pericula cautum.’ Which is the equivalent of ‘Wise men … learn by others’ harms, fools scarcely by their own ….’ by Benjamin Franklin.

O taste and see that the LORD is good

O, taste and see that the Lord is good. Free Scripture Card – O –

O taste and see that the Lord is good

O taste and see that the LORD is good

Wanting to grow our own vegetables

Where to begin? I’ll tell you what happened to us last week. For awhile now have I been wanting for us to grow our own vegetables. Not in the least because I only seem to tolerate organic vegetables and it is not always possible to get hold of these for a good price or at all. So you probably know what it is like, everyone now and then I bring up the topic of us growing our own vegetables. This brings all kinds of challenges. Such as we need to keep the dog off it, the pony, the hares, the possums and possibly the kangeroos.

Do we have kangaroos in our yard? No. But we do have kangaroos right outside our fences munching away on the grasses and challenging our Mastiff/Dane cross. We wouldn’t at all be surprised if mums and their joeys would hop in for a visit once the greens get up to a decent height.

The upshot really is that building garden beds and protection around it to keep the wildlife at bay costs a certain amount of money which we would have to save up for. So we talk about it more than we do about it.

Clean fill

Although one day, a couple of weeks ago,  one of my daughters decided to browse Gumtree to see if there is any ‘clean fill’ available. The answer was no.

The next day, midday, we hear all kinds of noises coming down our drive and the noises are so loud and big that both girls look at me to see how we’re going to deal with this. As I stick my head out of the window, I can see this M A S S I V E, as in H U M O N G E O U S monster truck coming down our drive. He stops and starts pouring out soil, smack bam on our drive.

So I go, ‘Oi, Oi , what ye doing?’ A big smiley face beams up at me and says, ‘As ordered ma’am, first left, down the drive.’

I smile back, telling him that I may have placed an order (up high) but hadn’t been told about any delivery, nor any cash to be paying for that  amount of soil either. Mr Smiley climbs back in his truck to talk to Mr Boss guy who had told him to deliver ‘first left, down the drive.’

A minute or so later Mr Smiley once more descends from his truck, bigger than my house, and tells me that he cannot get hold of Mr Boss but is very happy to follow his instructions and deliver as he was told.

Yes I want it

‘Do I want it?’

‘Yes, I want it.” I don’t know how much it is but we live on an acre and after years of drought a lot of the soil has pretty much disappeared and the rocks are showing through. For years now have I been wanting to plant cuttings of our May bushes and Dracaena and Frangipani around the borders of the property to replace the bushes which keeled over in the drought. But as we all know .. no soil .. no planting.

I repeat ‘ Yes, I want it but I won’t be writing out any cheques for it.’ Mr Smiley then continues doing what he does best with this massive smile on his face he once more pulls the lever to release a minimum of some twenty if not thirty trailer loads of beautiful, beautiful soil on our drive.

No, my girls didn’t order this soil, nor did any of my neighbours. I put in a humble request and send it sky high. Wow!

O taste and see that the Lord is good!

O taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed are they that trust in Him.

Thank you also Mr Peter Horne who owns the truck and sent his friendly worker to our place.

We once ordered and ate a cake which had the words ‘O taste and see that the LORD is good’ written on it. According to my nephew it was the best cake he ever tasted in his life and you can read about this here and here.

footnote

As I’m writing both my girls are shovelling the good earth into our garden beds. My youngest just told me earlier that there is 14 shovel loads in a wheel barrow and 10 wheelbarrows in a garden box. One of our neighbours has been helping her with giving her sticks and drilling them in the sides of our boxes as well as mesh wire to place around our boxes to keep the wildlife out. How blessed are we with a Father who hears our prayers and neighbours and local operators as fine as that?

No man can serve two masters ... Matthew 6:24

Free Scripture Card – N – No man can serve two masters …

No man can serve two masters

No man can serve two masters ... Matthew 6:24

About this blog - what is heaven all about?

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one,
and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Idyllic childhood

In one of my past lives as a child, my parents owned a beach shop in Hoek van Holland and I helped them in our shop and grew up on the beach. Apart from all the ordinary mayhem, I had a wonderful childhood and my Mum was there for us always, we were very blessed. Neither of my parents was overly ambitious, both were happy to take each day as it comes and just to raise their kids.

Working too hard … too many masters

Later on in my life as a wife to a medico, I managed the medical centres which we owned and this was an extremely stressful and hectic life. Neither one of us did this for the money. My husband as a doctor simply did what he did best and I as the wife helped out where I could. Because of our position, money flew in readily and out just as easily.

When my health crashed spectacularly I sought out the Lord with all my soul and all my heart and all my might. Cheap isn’t it? Only when I was down did I get back to my roots and prayed my heart out. This is when I learned that unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.

I never actively pursued money. In fact I chose to be there for my kids like my Mum was there for my brothers and sisters and I. This meant that I had a full-time job managing our clinics at the same time as being a full-time Mum educating our kids myself. This no doubt contributed to my crumbling health.

What I learned during the dark times is that no-one can perform two full-time jobs at the same time. I tried and I did and eventually I failed and paid for this dearly with my health.

Even though I was not pursuing wealth I was serving not two but three masters. My husband, our clinics and my children and all pretty much 24/7.

With God there is hope

With God there is hope however and what He says always works in my life. Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. I learned that I had my loyalties mixed up and nowadays I run everything past my Creator before I commit to anything.

The full verse from this week’s Scripture Card reads:

No man can serve two masters:
for either he will hate the one, and love the other;
or else he will hold to the one,
and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

No man can serve two masters ... Matthew 6:24

If you find yourself playing catch-up from dawn to dusk, have a quiet moment and ask yourself, ‘Who are you serving?’ and ‘Is this who you want to be serving?’ Do you have love, peace and balance in your life?

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God

The excerpt from the sermon on the mount then continues to tell us that it makes no sense to worry about anything at all other than seeking the kingdom of God first of all. The chapter in Matthew 6 finishes off with,

Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow:

for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Mine angel shall go before thee

Free Scripture Card – M – Mine angel shall go before thee … are angels real?

Mine angel shall go before thee

About this blog - what is heaven all about?

Are Angels real?

There are quite a few occasions in the Bible where we are told that an angel of the Lord will clear the way or bring a message or save someone from harm. For instance Abraham told his servant that an angel of the LORD would go before him to help find his son Isaac a wife (Rebekah). Moses was told that an angel would go before him to deal with hostile nations. God sent an angel to shut the lion’s mouth so that Daniel would not get hurt and Jesus sent an angel to his followers with warnings and admonitions. You can read about some of these occasions when you click here.

These are only some of the angel stories, there are plenty more and later on I plan to do a study on this. If you want to contribute to this (future) post you can send me your angel stories. Because of these Scriptural references we can be assured that there are angels watching over us and keeping us from harm.

I remember reading a story of a family praying that no-one would be hurt, and for angels to please protect them, during a violent storm where the wind was threatening to take the roof of their house. Sure enough, the turbulent wind delivered as threatened. Afterwards one of their neighbours, surveying the damage and listening to their stories, scoffed saying, “Where did all that prayer get you, mate?”

To which both mum and dad replied with a smile that their prayers were answered because indeed no-one was hurt and the damage could have been a whole lot worse.

Years ago, my car stalled whilst I was in a busy traffic jam and all I remember is getting out of the car to pull up the bonnet, you know to look like I was doing something to remedy my precarious situation. And then I went back in the car because really, what the heck was I supposed to do about it on my own? I honestly cannot recall seeing anyone at all but in no time was my car pushed to the side of the road and in no time did a RACQ vehicle appear behind me to give me assistance. I cannot remember who, what, where but I remember thinking, if this isn’t the work of angels helping me out, I don’t know what is.

I’ve been in a number of car crashes and each and every single one could have finished me off but this did not happen, praise the LORD. I firmly believe that the Lord’s angels kept me from serious harm.

I think that it is good practice to pray before going out the door, “Thank you Father for sending your angel before me.’ Amen.

Mine angel shall go before thee

Mine angel shall go before thee

I like angels a lot and have written a song about one of them. It is very personal and I hope that you like it.

Meanwhile, if  you have an angel story, please share!

Free Scripture Card – L – To love or not to love is not a choice .. we’re commanded to love

We’re commanded to love one and other.

About this blog - what is heaven all about?

Loving component is not optional for believers.

What makes me say that we’re commanded to love one and other? Lots of different bible verses tell me that the ‘loving component’ is not optional  for those who decide to follow Yehovah and His Son.

Loving Struggle Street

Last week a wonderful example of this ‘loving’ was shown in and around Mt Druitt in NSW Australia.

The SBS, which is a government funded TV broadcaster, decided to air a show called ‘Struggle Street.’ This show is a portrayal of around ten locals who are doing it tough. After watching a preview of the show, not only the mayor but also the local garbo’s got ‘trucking mad‘ and a blockade was formed to stop the broadcasting of the show because they considered the portrayal of their fellow citizens ‘garbage.’

This is an heartwarming true story of locals getting up in arms to defend their fellow citizens who are from less privileged areas. As one local radio broadcaster put it, ‘He was pi***d off deluxe,’ when he discovered what was going on.

 Love the Stranger as yourself

The Scripture Card for this week commands us to love one and other. And not just love God and those we feel close to. But love everyone, including the strangers. Strangers meaning people we don’t understand, with cultures different from ours.

Verses from the Prophet Moses

The verses on today’s Scripture Card are from the prophet Moses who is considered God’s friend.

And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.

Knock and it shall be opened unto you.

Fulfilled promises.

A little while ago I told you how we prayed for a place we could afford and where pets are allowed. I mentioned also how New Age positive thinking doesn’t work for me because it lacks the faith component. In contrast I like the promises made in the Bible and by the Son of God because of the proven track record.

There have been so many fulfilled promises in my life that I’ve pretty much lost track of a lot of them but I certainly remember all the big ones including the ‘upgrade in residential comforts,’ because I enjoy these comforts every single day.

There were a lot of factors that came into play for this promise to be fulfilled, such as right time, place, residence, fine friends giving appropriate references, receptive and kind landlord and so on.

And don’t forget faith. Lotsa prayer and lotsa faith. Whilst we were on the Sunny Coast we couldn’t find a suitable place for love or money and I remember telling the girls not to fret. I distinctly remember saying that these kind of things have a way of turning around quickly and I said, “Before you know it, the tide may turn and people will offer us somewhere to stay for free or something like that.”

Soon after a family member as well as a very kind ‘health professional’ friend offered us accommodation. When we arrived in our new town there were offers for rentals ‘free for the first month’ and so on. We had faith, we committed all to Our Father and we trusted that everything would work out well and, Praise The LORD, things worked out really well for us.

Trust in THE LORD and His SON.

When Jesus gave his famous sermon on the mount he told his listeners that if we knock, it shall be opened unto us. But this wasn’t all he had to say about this wonderful promise. There was plenty more. And I wonder if other prophets said a similar thing. After all Jesus, as a Jewish prophet, taught from the old Scriptures. Let’s have a look to see who else told us about this promise.

Promises, promises.

Promises made in Psalms

The following verses are, apart from one, all credited to King David. King David mucked up plenty times but he was confident, that as long as he repented and continued to commit to and trust in the LORD, GOD would hear him. no matter what his situation or his failures, David would always eventually turn to the LORD for repentance and forgiveness and strength to keep on going despite his failures and inadeqacies.

Asaph, with his verses from Psalms, contrasted the trust and commitment shown by King David with the nonchalance and entitlement of the (wicked) pretenders and hypocrites.

I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.

Trust in the Lord, and do good …
Delight thyself also in the Lord:
and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the Lord;
trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble:
thou wilt prepare their heart,
thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

Call upon me in the day of trouble:
I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.
But unto the wicked God saith,
What hast thou to do to declare my statutes,
or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him,
to all that call upon him in truth.
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him:
he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

As a King, David was rich with many servants and resources, yet his trust and strength was always in God and not in his wealth nor in men.

Promises made by prophet Isaiah

Prophet Isaiah taught that we should always seek God who will abundantly forgive anyone who is genuinely remorseful.

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
call ye upon him while he is near:

Let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts:
and let him return unto the Lord,
and he will have mercy upon him;
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Till I read the Ten Commandments I didn’t even realise what I had to be remorseful for. This had much to do with the circles I used to move in and the fact that western societies celebrate covetousness. Around the concepts of stealing and lying there were many blurred lines in my life. And what about honouring your parents, sure I was nice to them, but ‘honouring’ them? What? Honour God and Go(o)d alone. Huh? I used to mix all religions and thought this was a smart thing to do. Swearing … why not? Doesn’t everyone? And hating is akin to killing? Oops.

When I started to read the bible and I came across the word wicked I initially thought this meant murderers and the like. It wasn’t till later that I realised that the pretenders and hypocrites were referred to as ‘the wicked’ as opposed to those who make a genuine effort to do the right thing according to the guidelines set by our Holy Father.
Reading the Commandments made me realise that it is a good thing to follow my gut instinct over and above society’s norms and guidelines and peer pressure. So, yes I have plenty to be remorseful about. The Commandments are literally a godsend to me because they are transparent, easy to follow and set a universal standard for human morality and decency.
I just love them!

Promises made by prophet Jeremiah

Prophet Jeremiah prophesises that when people look for God, they will find Him; with mighty promises attached for doing so.

You will seek me and find me
when you seek me with all your heart.

Call unto me, and I will answer thee,
and show thee great and mighty things,
which thou knowest not.

Promise made by prophet Amos

Prophet Amos says that seeking God assures life.

Seek ye me and ye shall live Amos 5:4

For thus said the LORD to the house of Israel,
Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

Prophet Amos makes the connection of seeking THE LORD with eternal life.

Jesus reiterated what the Prophets said

As we can see above from the quotes by the prophets, what Jesus said was nothing new and He merely reiterated what the prophets had been saying all along. The above scriptural references made by the prophets of old was likely the kind of text that Jesus quoted from. I am only quoting a few references here; there are plenty more quotes in GOD’S Holy Word about seeking Him and how to go about it to get  marvellous results. After reading all these promises I can see a pattern emerge and some kind of formula appear.

Promises made by Jesus

It is good to keep in mind that the promises are made to followers of Yehovah and His Son. And we should also remember that any of us at any time can choose to be part of God’s posse. Faithful believers who make a genuine effort to do all the right things can expect good results when they apply the teachings from the Holy Word and live by the rules which are set by the Creator of our universe.

Applying ‘positive thinking’ without the ‘faith component’ does not work for me. It may work for others. But for me, life is more about the intimate relationship I have with my Creator and His Son than it is about ‘wanting this and/or wanting that.’ Anything that flows from the relationship I have is an extra, a bonus and very much welcomed and graciously accepted. But these extra’s and bonuses are certainly not what motivates me.

I like how Keith Johnson puts it; “When we have vision, God will make provision.”

So what else did Jesus say?

Jesus said, if you remain true to me, I’ll be true to you.

If you remain in me and my words remain in you,
ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Again I say unto you,
That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask,
it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name,
there am I in the midst of them.

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
believing, ye shall receive.

The  Formula

The ‘Knock and it shall be opened unto you’ promise is well known and no secret at all. But few people realise that  there are many components to this promise that need to be heeded if we want a positive result. Some people think that it is possible to get something for nothing but as we just read, if we want a positive response when relying on this promise we need to make sure that we do our part to the best of our ability.

What is our part? The above verses tell us to trust, commit, call, seek and ask humbly. We’re told to do good and call upon Him in truth with all our heart. If necessary return to Him, if possible be in agreement with your nearest and dearest.  Keep His words and commandments and ask according to His will. We’re told to pray and to believe. There is a minimum of sixteen steps to this formula.

1. Trust.
2. Commit.
3. Call.
4. Seek.
5. Ask.
6. Be humble.
7. Do good.
8. Call in truth.
9. With all our heart.
10. If necessary, return to Him.
11. Be in agreement with nearest and dearest.
12. Keep His Words.
13. Keep His Commandments.
14. Ask according to His will.
15. Pray.
16. Believe.

As you can see, there are many components to the knock-and-you-shall-find promise. If you have been knocking for a while with limited results maybe check if all the boxes are ticked before you start banging that door down.

And this is the confidence that we have in him,
that, if we ask any thing according to his will,
he heareth us:

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him,
because we keep his commandments,
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Knock and it will be opened to you Matthew 7:7

The full promise

The full promise as given by Jesus reads like this,

“Ask, and it will be given to you;
seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.

“For everyone who asks receives,
and he who seeks finds,
and to him who knocks it will be opened.

Free Scripture card – J – Let little children come unto me ..

Let little children come unto me ..

Jesus said, let little children come unto me; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven

We’re supposed to be like little children

We’re supposed to be like little children if we want to live forever. Little children muck up but never too bad. They’re often a pain in the .. but usually not to the extent that it cannot be overlooked. Little children don’t as a rule worry about tomorrow because they have no expectations about what tomorrow should hold and bring. For the little children I know and have known, every single day is a brand new day with brand new adventures.

Little children hug you like no-one else can, their smile is bigger than the sun and their trust in their parents in unequalled.

Can you jump?

Most little children can be a handful at times and I remember an occassion where I tried to distract my eldest, around two years old at the time. I asked her if she could jump. She nodded affirmitavely. I asked her to show me and she jumped whilst smiling broadly at me. The distraction worked and she seemd to enjoy the jumping game, so we continued. I asked her, ‘Can you jump with one leg at a a time?’ In response she jumped first on her right foot and after that on her left foot. Then she jumped with both her feet at the same time, first a little and then a lot.

For the grand finale I asked her to jump with both legs up in the air as high as she could. For some reason she took this to mean with both her legs out in front and she landed with a crash on her bum. Tears, hugs and cuddles and all was good. We still laugh nowadays when I ask her to jump with both legs at the same time.

When life, situations or people make us jump, and we fall flat on our face or on our bum, we are to be like little children and pick ourselves up and do it all over again with a little more wisdom and a little more knowledge. My daughter only ever once jumped with her legs out front, she learned very quickly that this doesn’t work. She didn’t blame me for falling on her bum although  for a moment she did not know what happened and was surprised at the result of her, seemingly innocent, action.

Trust like a little child

Just like my two year old toddler, sometimes we do what is asked from us  and we don’t get the result we’re after or we get hurt. Instead of getting mad, bemoaning our fate or blaming others; Jesus teaches us to live with the trust of a little child and keep on going. He tells us to take our worries to Him and know that in all things God’s will be done.

I believe that this is what’s meant by the Scripture verse on today’s Scripture card; the kingdom of heaven is made up of people as innocent as little children.

If you have a different take on this Scripture verse I would love to hear from you.

Man shall not live by bread alone Matthew 4:4

Why Positive Thinking doesn’t work.

I make no secret of my love for the Word of GOD. Last week I wrote how my faith and reliance on the Word of God helped my family when we had to move house and weren’t able to find suitable accommodation. After praying and relying on the Word of God we received so much more than we ever imagined possible.

I like to share with you a little more about my history. I used to study Wicca, mythology, mysticism, various Eastern religions as well as every New Age practice under the sun, particularly the New Age positive thinking kind.

What I discovered is that positive thinking is the only way to go as long as this goes hand in hand with regular reality checks. But the crucial factor is that positive thinking on its own doesn’t work. Well it didn’t for me. Why doesn’t positive thinking on its own work? The following is what people in the know have to say about this.

Russell Bishop, author of ‘Workarounds that Work,’ wrote for the Huffington Post ‘Why Positive Thinking Just Doesn’t Work.’

Our friends at Lifehack give us 4 reasons why positive thinking doesn’t work and what to do instead.

Laura Newcomer Senior Editor at Greatist tells us that the trick is finding the balance between being optimistic and being realistic.

Mark Morgan Ford mentions a study by Julie Norem in her book The Positive Power of Negative Thinking.

All of these writers came to the same conclusion and that is that positive thinking on its own doesn’t work.

None of these writers address the faith factor.

Interestingly enough, none of the writers mentioned above address the faith factor. What it boiled down to for me in my life is that I discovered that many of the ‘New Age Thinking’ is as ancient as the earth but has been rehashed and regurgitated without the faith component. This may indeed work for some but it does not work for me.

About the ‘believe’ factor.

For instance the ‘believe’ factor is huge in New Age positive thinking and religious faiths alike. My book shelves were littered with dozens of how-to manuals telling me to ‘Believe and it will be so.’ Believe in what? Myself? That goes without saying doesn’t it? The universe? Believe in who or what?

What this kind of positive thinking is lacking is the support of HE Who is in Charge. If your objectives and endeavours aren’t blessed by our Creator you’re simply wasting your time. That is if you plan to ultimately end up in a good place.

Jesus says ‘Whatever you believe in your heart will be so.’ He says this to His followers, the people who believe in Him.
See, that’s the kind of instruction manual I can work with. Jesus says, follow me and then when our heart is being remodeled to do good for humanity as opposed to be self centered, we can ask Him for anything at all and the promise is that our Father will hear and respond.

How will our heart be remodeled? By following the prophet’s teachings and Jesus’ example, through prayer and by reading and applying the Holy Word.

It is written men shall not live by bread alone

It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

M

True wisdom and knowledge is found in The Holy Word and without this, no amount of positive thinking will get you anywhere you want to go. Yes, it may do so for you in this lifetime and if that’s all you’re after, all is good in your hood. If you believe in an afterlife however, I doubt that positive thinking on its own will show you the way.

Wordly wealth is not that hard to obtain but if you’re after a different kinda profit prophet, you’ll find that just the positive thinking on its own is not going to cut it.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.

Perfect Peace

Why do we utilise the power of positive thinking and prayer? Because we’re either trying to get away from a situation we’re in, or we’re aiming to go to, or we’re trying to attract to ourselves a more desirable place or situation. On the odd occasion we may utilise prayer to give thanks for all our blessings. Ultimately we all want peace, love and happiness in our life and we’re either actively working to achieve that or actively working to get away from where we don’t want to be.

It is without a doubt that some people become hugely successful in life without having a faith of any kind.

When I say that positive thinking does not work, I’m am talking for myself here and for me no amount of positive thinking ever got me the result I was after. Relying on God’s Holy Word however, is a different ballgame altogether. It has taken the anxiety out of everything because ultimately I pray that in all things God’s will be done. That means that all is in good order in my life because He is in charge.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,
whose mind is stayed on thee:
because he trusteth in thee.

I’d love you to share with me if positive thinking works for you and how.

Happy are those who rely on the Lord

Free Scripture card – H – plus 15 Scripture verses on hope

Happy are those whose hope is in the Lord their God.

For those of you who have been reading my blog for a little while, you may know that I did not always rely totally on the Lord. Even though my Mum fed me regular ‘Jesus’ stories,’ it was not till later in life that I recognised Jesus for the Saviour He is.

An enormous amount of anxiety falls away when we stop relying on people and realise that everything is in God’s very capable hands.  All we need to do is remember at all times who is in charge, get out of the way and excercise those knees.

Help please!

it was Gods Word and my hope and trust in Him which helped my children and I move house and find a place one hundred times nicer than the one we were in, as well as more than one hundred bucks a week cheaper. This was in the year 2008 when we lived in Noosa and our rent was to go up from $280/week to $450 or something. To be honest I cannot quite remember what the rent exactly was, or was going to be raised to, but it was by that much that I knew we had to move elsewhere.

In the end we told our friends that it was time for a sea change. But the reallity was that Noosa had become a popular place and house prices as well as rentals were going through the roof. After nearly a decade in that wonderful place we just weren’t able to find a suitable rental. I was in no postion to go out and find something, having been confined to bed for some years due to various health issues. My daughters did a few trips here and there to find a place  but overall it was pretty miserable and seemingly hopeless. In that area rents were just around those prices and for us had become unaffordable. To move to a different area seemed impossible because I had just, amongst other things, experienced a major pancreatic attack,  wasn’t very mobile and any kind of travel was potentially life threatening to me.
What to do?

My Rule of FIVE

On our knees, that’s what we did. We lived in a very pleasant three bedroom place near the centre of town, ten minutes away from the beach with a relatively small garden. I just wanted a place which we could afford and where pets were allowed. But I thought that if I was going to put in a request, humble as I tried to be, I might as well ask for what I wanted. So I decided to be bold. I have a rule of FIVE which in a nutshell goes like this; to determine if something is a ‘goer’ we apply five rules. For instance, with regards to work;

1. Can I significantly contribute to this company?
2. Happy  with the wages?
3. Location of work?
4. Who are my colleagues, do we hold similar values?
5. What is the workload? Am I a natural match or will it be an effort?

If I get three out of five that is a good match and I take whatever is on offer, anything more is a bonus and anything less I can only take on if there is no other choice or I can somehow create improvement in the near future. When I get fussy I may go up to ten points and add in; possibilities for advancement, does the job description match my qualifications and so on, you get the drift.

My FIVE wishes

What my girls and I settled on with our wishes for a rental was that we put in a request on High as follows, 1. light and spacious, 2. pets, 3. affordable, 4. tiles not carpet, 5. near town.

The situation was absolutely hopeless, we asked all our friends in town to keep an eye out for us, rang every real estate agent, combed through local newspapers and internet sites which advertised rentals and with only two weeks to go, nothing! Asked my brother in the next town a couple of hours away; nothing!

In a final desperate attempt, I phoned in response to an advertisement in a town a few hours away and yep they were happy to show us their abode. We climbed in the car and as soon as I arrived in town the owner of the caravan park where we were staying phoned for an ambulance to take me to hospital because I was as sick as a dog and he was not going to have me die in his caravan park. Well, praise the Lord I didn’t give his caravan park a bad name and we eventually saw the rental which was advertised, liked it and signed a rental agreement.

My hope  is in the LORD

What is so special about this story? We knew that we had to move six months in advance and couldn’t find anything no matter how we tried.
During the process of looking for suitable accomodation I found appropriate scripture verses in the bible and I wrote these verses on bits of paper to memorise. Remember how we’re  told  that trusting  in the Lord will keep our mind in perfect peace?  Well, this certainly worked for us.

We read these verses out and sang them and my girls and I, we meditated upon these verses, putting our trust in the Lord. This resulted in me signing a rental agreement for a place which had not three of our wishes come true, nor four or  five. No, our new place has 100, ONE HUNDRED!!! features over and above our old place. Not only that but it ended up $100/week less rent than Noosa which was a jolly good thing because shortly after we settled in our new home I lost my income. But that’s another story.

Our old place was really nice but it didn’t have a HUGE veranda, wasn’t overlooking a bay, on one acre of land with extra amenities, white tiles (which happens to be my favourite colour) all through the house, a chef’s kitchen with a zillion cupboards and surfaces, which made my brother (a chef cook) drool, guest accomodation, views from each and every window in the house, beautiful wooden shutters, large tinted windows, a spa in the main bathroom. I’ll stop here or it will make you jealous too.

You can tell that I’m in love with this place and eternally grateful to the owners for allowing us to live here and buy it, if the Lord will, some day would be good. When we added up all the features we truly came to one hundred of lovely features that we like in this place, over and above what we had in our old place.

We wished for five features and would have settled if we had received three of those five. We received so much over and above what we asked for that it made me cry. Thank you Lord. My hope is in the LORD.

The reference on this Scripture card is taken from Psalm 73 which is generally accepted to have been written by Asaph, a 10th-century BCE Levite. Asaph served in Jerusalem for all of David’s reign, and it is believed that he set to music many of  King David’s psalms.

‘What does it mean ‘to be of a clean heart?’ Psalm 73 grapples with one of life’s most troublesome questions as to why the wicked prosper and seemingly avoid punishment. This Psalm addresses the present prosperity of evil people and the sorrows of those who are of a clean heart. The Psalm is a warning to us who may at times be envious of the rich. It is a warning not to fall into temptation and a reminder to the wealthy that their riches, enjoyable as they may be, are temporary.

I’ve certainly had a taste of that in my life. I’ve come to realise that if one has way more than those around them, this means that one is not sharing. One could say that I’ve fallen mightily and mainly through my own stupidity. I know that riches come and go but GOD and his love and powerful inspiring Word are forever.

There is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.

Psalm 73 finishes with lines which are close to my heart:

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

It is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God,
that I may declare all thy works.

God is good to such as are of a clean heart.

Aussie Celebs on Living Forever as well as a Free Scripture card – E – Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit

Aussie celebrities on Living Forever

When a bunch of Aussie celebrities was asked about living forever, only one of them, Wil Anderson, decided that he’d rather die tomorrow. The other answers ranged from living on top of a mountain with a pack of wolves eating cake and drinking gin to still having plenty fish to catch and wanting to see plenty more Crows premierships. To read more on our celebrities’ opinion on living forever visit Perth Now and News.com.au.

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit

How many times has someone pulled the wool over your eyes? This used to happen to me all the time. I simply believed whatever anyone told me. I know that this is not necessarily a smart thing to do and considered to be gullible or naieve but just the same I always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt.
Once I started to read the Bible in earnest I found many different guidelines as to how to determine if someone is honest and straightforward or not. This particular Scripture quote on Scripture card E gives us one of these guidelines.

Jesus tells us to beware of false prophets and he explains how to recognise them. It is rather straightforward; good people produce good results and bad people get bad results.

Have you ever seen anyone  carefully  selecting all the rotten apples to be taken to a good place? No, me neither.

Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit Matthew 7

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing,
but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

If you can think of other scripture quotes or non-biblical ways to find out cheats, I’ll be happy to hear about it.

Do unto others

Free Scripture card – D – Do unto others

The Golden Rule

The creed to, Do unto others as we would like them to do unto us,’ is commonly known as the Golden Rule and virtually all religions teach their followers to live by some kind of variation of this rule.

Do unto othersIn the book of Luke it is mentioned as, ‘And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

Apostle Matthew recorded that Jesus pretty much summed up all moral guidelines in one sentence when he said, ‘Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.’

Free Scripture Card C

Free Scripture card – C – Children, keep yourselves from idols

Keep yourselves from idols.

When I was little I collected postcards of kittens and puppies. As a child I slept in the attic and had rows of these ‘cute’ postcards pinned to the wooden beams above my bed. No one I know would refer to pictures of kittens and puppies as idols. But what about movie stars and sports heros? What about the cult figures of children’s tv programs and xbox super heros? TV and other celebrities, pornography? Would we classify these cartoons, actors and images as idols?

What is an idol?

First ask Google

What does the word idol mean? I like to keep things simple so when I try to find out the meaning of a word I first ask Google. Google tells me that an idol is an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship. And according to Google an idol is also a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved or revered.

definition of the word idol according to Google

What Google tells us is that the word ‘idol’ is derived from the words ‘image’ and ‘likeness.’

Then ask Microsoft

Remember I like to keep things simple but I also want to verify that what Google tells me is agreed upon, so after I ask Google I go to Microsoft Word and right-click with my mouse on the word ‘idol’ and what shows are the words: hero, pinup, star, obsession, ideal, favorite, pin-up and statue.

According to these definitions, my pinned-up cute little kittens and puppies were classified as idols after all.

check with Wikepedia

By now I am convinced about what idols are but for good measure I ask the people’s encyclopedia Wikepedia which tells me the same thing once more.

definition of idol according to WikepediaAll the above definitions agree with the biblical meaning of the word idol. Sounds to me that according to apostle John we’re not to have idols of any kind.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and of a good courage

Free Scripture card – B – Be Strong and of a good courage

Promises from the bible.

My Mum told me all the Jesus stories and I absolutely loved them. But when she told me those stories, all these years ago,  I didn’t realise that Jesus was a real person. The way I understood the stories as a child was that Jesus was more like a mythical figure. It wasn’t till years later, when I started to read the bible in earnest, that I came to understand the significance of Jesus’ life and the promises and lessons to be learned from the bible.

Scripture cards

So even though throughout my life I’ve carried around handwritten scripture cards with me and found comfort in them, it wasn’t till much later in life that I recognised the real power and energy of the promises made by our Creator and his Son and the fulfilment of these promises in the lives of real people as mentioned in the bible.

What is love again?

I never thought, like some do, that the stories in the bible are fairy tales. But for most my life I didn’t recognise the reality of the biblical history and the message of the Jewish people. It was only when I became seriously ill and at death’s door that I saw the pitiyfulness of life unless it is filled with true love and dedication to this love. What is love again? According to the Holy Word,

This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments
and his commandments are not hard to keep.

You may well be thinking; what is it with this girl and the commandments? I tell you why I love the commandments so much. My life wasn’t filled with rules and regulations, in my life pretty much everyone did whatever was good in their own eyes. It didn’t work for me. It got me in trouble and it got me ill. As you can imagine in a family where everyone just makes up rules as they go along you’ll find sheer anarchy. Once I ‘discovered’ God’s rules for loving each other, and consciously started to make an effort to stick with those rules, my life just changed miraculously.

Rule number four, rest one day a week

come unto me and I will give you rest

For instance, we’re told to rest one day a week. I don’t know about you but I certainly didn’t ever, rest that is. Once I started to obey the commandment to rest, my whole life started to change around for the better. What follows when we obey this commandment is the peace and knowledge which comes with the understanding that God is in charge and there is nothing you can do by working 24/7 that is going to change that.

God himself rested on the seventh day, after he created our universe. What’s good enough for my Creator, is good enough for me. I’m not arguing with a day of rest but gratefully accept this blessing in my life to completely rest and hang out with friends and family and read scripture and maybe even fit in a good deed here and there.

Be strong and of a good courage

The scripture verse quoted on the second scripture card is taken from the Book of Joshua and we’re reminded in the first book of Joshua to follow all of God’s rules. The promise is, as was given to Joshua and fulfilled,  that as long as we follow God’s commandments, we will prosper, have good success, find that God will be with us wherever we go and He won’t fail nor forsake us.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and of a good courage

When anything goes awry in our life and this happens in my life all the time, don’t freak out, panic or allow your emotions to take you on a roller coaster ride, just remember that God is in charge and all we need to do is be strong and of a good courage.

I so wish that I had these cards when my children were little and instead of too many hours of counselling sessions and time spent in therapy I could have kissed away their tears, handed them a bible and this card, and said, ‘Darling, just do the right thing and be strong and of a good courage.’

GOD hath made me to laugh! How? He kept me alive against all odds. He pulled me out of the miry clay, He set my feet upon a rock, He established my goings. He leads, guides, directs and protects me. He takes care of my family and He tells me to teach my children.

SCRIPTURE ALPHABET A

Another amazing scripture verse

One of the most amazing scripture verses I’ve come across is where we’re told to ask and it shall be given to us, to seek so that we shall find.

The other day I shared with you one of my favourite scripture verses, With God all things are possible’ and I told you how applying this verse to my life got me a, near enough, instant response. I mentioned that I asked for $15000. The amount just popped in my head. At the time I had bills to pay and I needed treatment for various ailments. I had asked for plenty things before but never been so bold as to ask for a sum of money as large as that.

This money, plus more, was actually owed to me because shared property had been sold off. I didn’t know this however at the time of my request. The next day I boldly repeated my request and very much to my surprise a cheque was written out in my name. Without my prayer and bold request I doubt if I ever would have found out about this money that actually belonged to me.

Ask anything according to His will

What I learned is that GOD’s WORD is true and He never speaks idle words. I want my children to experience the same comfort and help I get from reading and applying scripture verses in my life. To remind us all of our favourite verses I used to write them on cards and place them in strategic places such as in front of the bathroom mirror, in our purse and on our desks and so on. How I wish that I had known about these wonderful verses when my children were younger. Not to worry though, we’re certainly making up for lost time now.

Instant antidote to depression and anxiety

These verses are an instant antidote to depression and anxiety. Till I read the bible I didn’t have an authority figure in my life to whom I could go to with my woes and worries for feedback and advice. Now I’ve finally mustered up the courage to go to and ask the highest authority, my only problem is to keep the small stuff to myself and not sweat it. I don’t even have to wait in line. I’m pretty sure this goes for all of us, as long as we ask according to His will, we can be pretty sure that our wishes are heard and will be fulfilled; how good is that? To know this with absolute certainty has brought a lot of peace to my life.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that,
if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask,
we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

All the promises in the bible are true and if you don’t believe me I suggest that you try them out for yourself and see what happens. I asked to be kept alive and I was, I sought for holistic treatments and received these, I knocked on many doors and I’ve received such wonderful responses that some days my cheeks are barely big enough to carry my grins.

Ask and it shall be given you

Ask, and it shall be given you;
seek, and ye shall find;
knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

For every one that asketh receiveth;
and he that seeketh findeth;
and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Reading through the bible gives me an enormous amount of comfort and inspiration and I like to think that these verses will do the same for you. Feel free to share and use these scripture graphics for personal use anytime you feel a little stuck or in need of a helping hand. You may be surprised to find that help is just around the corner. What have you got to loose? Just ask.
