Hearing His Voice: Meeting Jesus in the Garden of Promise

by Meredith Swift

DESCRIPTION

Do you feel tired and stressed, in need of replenishment and refreshment?
Do you want to find out more about the One who loves you more deeply, and knows you more thoroughly, than you could ever imagine?
HEARING HIS VOICEDo you want to find out practical ways to grow your faith and walk more closely with Jesus?
Then this book is for you!

Written during recovery

Meredith wrote this book during recovery from an extremely challenging time in her life – having gone through a divorce, resignation from her long term teaching job and relocation to a different city to access better services for her autistic daughter. Her daughter was also very unwell at this time, becoming bedridden by a mystery illness. All of this had left Meredith feeling exhausted, fearful, alone and very isolated.

Guidance of Scripture

Meredith knew she needed to strengthen her fragile spirit and overcome the fear of this time. She sought the guidance of Scripture and the assistance of the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing that only He could bring comfort and healing at the deep levels required. Meredith knew that her relationship with her Creator meant He was available 24/7 and so she started to schedule regular time where she communicated with Him.

The Garden of Promise

Covered with prayer and Scripture, Meredith visualised meeting Jesus in a beautiful garden that she came to know as the Garden of Promise – so named for the promises of goodness and grace found liberally throughout the Scriptures.
This book is the result of these communications – an unforgettable and inspiring journey of encouragement and healing, where Jesus spoke new life into Meredith’s being. Her feelings of isolation lifted and she felt herself soothed, replenished and deeply loved by spending this time with the Lord Jesus Christ.
You, too, are invited to go on this journey through the pages of this book as you hear His voice and meet Jesus in the Garden of Promise.

What is Love? Does the Bible tell us?

WHAT IS LOVE? Does the Bible tell us?

What is Love? Does the Bible tell us?DISCLAIMER for my religious friends who believe differently- Mark 9-37-39, John 13-34-36 and 1 John 5-2. (2)

Read disclaimer here.

He interrupted my writing as he was hitting away at my tap. I could see him accidently drop a washer down the gurgler. That’s when he exclaimed;

I HATE RELIGION!-“I HATE religion!”

“Why is that?” I asked, wondering if some of the Scripture verses on my walls could have triggered that comment.

“Because religion is the cause of most of the wars and hatred in the world,” my newfound friend Brad said.

I asked him if he really believed that and without even thinking about it, he shot back at me, “I do not believe it, I’m convinced of it!”

“All religions?” I asked him.

Without hesitation, he responded, “ALL of them.”

I said, “Funny that because my religion tells me that we are to love each other.”

“What religion would that be?” He quizzed.

“I love God’s Word,” I said.“Mmpphh, you’re one of those Christians,” He said.

“Mmpphh, you’re one of those Christians,” He said.

Clearly, Brad was assuming things. What was I to say to that? I did not know what he meant when he said, ‘one of those,’ but I wanted him to like me and not hate me because of my religion. But more than that, I wanted to convey to him that my religion is one of love. And I was not quite sure how to go about that because Brad clearly had preconceived notions about Christianity and what it entails being a Christian or being someone that loves God’s Word.
I didn’t know what his preconceived ideas were, other than that they weren’t positive.

I LOVE GODS WORDSo I repeated what is true for me and said, “I love God’s Word.”

Brad came over and sat down next to me. “You mean the Bible don’t you?”

I nodded affirmatively.

Well, that really got him going. He stood up again and walked up and down my living room with the spanner in his left hand, waving his arms up and down in despair. “The Bible has caused more wars and deaths and calamity than all other religions combined! How anyone can believe in fairy tales like that is beyond me.”

Maybe it was premature when earlier I referred to Brad as my newfound friend. My daughter had brought him over to fix a couple of leaky taps and a gate that had come off its hinges. I treated him as a friend because I was grateful that he came to fix a few things for a reasonable fee but I do not like it when people refer to God’s Word as fairy tales. At the same time, I recognise that this reference is generally used by people who have never read God’s Word.

I did not want him to go on a rant of no return. For the sake of our now seemingly fragile friendship, I decided to find out what got him going like that.

“You seem pretty passionate about your anti-religion stance Brad. Where is all that coming from?”

He sat down next to me again. “Mimi, come on, you can see what’s going on in the world, -If it weren't for religion...-surely? If it weren’t for religion…”
His voice trailed off and as he was about to take in a breath of fresh air, I noted,

“Religion doesn’t do anything Brad. It’s people and their interpretation of religion that can be a problem.”

He got up again, down. Up once more. He sure was passionate about the subject.

“So Mimi, you’re saying that the Bible doesn’t tell people to kill each other if they don’t believe according to the teachings?” And before I could answer, he continued. “You do know about the Inquisition and all the ‘Holy Wars’ that have been raging throughout the ages?”

You do know about the Inquisition and all the Holy Wars-

“Yes, I do Brad,” I said. And then I asked him, “Do you know about God’s Commandments?”

Brad shook his head as he walked back to the tap. “What do they have to do with anything,” he asked. “Does anyone even care about those anymore?”

“Good question Brad and pertinent too. You’re absolutely right. For all sorts of different reasons lots of ‘believers’ indeed don’t think that these Commandments apply to them. Many are of the opinion that their faith sets them above the law.

To get back to your other questions Brad, yes, I know about the Inquisition and all the GODS COMMANDMENTS‘Holy Wars’ and as far as I’m concerned the Commandments have everything to do with this. And you know why?”

He just stood there looking at me not quite sure where the conversation was going. So I continued,
“I tell you why the Commandments matter. They matter because the Commandments tell us not to kill, not to steal, not to lie, not to commit adultery, not to covet, to honour our elders and so on. This is what God’s Word teaches us right from the very beginning. The Commandments set a moral standard for the whole of society.

We were taught to be nice to our neighbour and to treat foreigners with kindness and the Bible tells us that those simple ten rules constitute love. They are a benchmark, a measure to live by and live up to.”

Brad looked at me and said, “Sounds wonderful. Mimi. Here’s a reality check for you, NO one is paying any attention or listening to any of those rules, nor following them.”

“Exactly my point Brad. It isn’t for me to judge if anyone is following God’s rules; what I notice however is that many believers follow all kinds of rules but not necessarily The Ten.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful indeed if we were to follow those ten simple rules? There’s PEOPLE INTERPRETnothing wrong with those rules, is there? There’s nothing wrong with the Bible either.  What’s wrong is that all through the ages and still today, people interpret God’s Word any way they like to suit their own purposes.

The Bible tells us to love one another. We’re taught that Jesus’ disciples will be known for their love for each other, we’re encouraged to turn the other cheek, bless our enemies and we’re taught that God is love and if we do not love we do not have God in us.

Can you find fault with any of that Brad?”

He looked bewildered. “But Mimi, no one is DOING that ‘loving thing.’ All these so called religious people are killing each other!”

“I know that Brad,” I said.

“Does that make the Commandments wrong or the people?

-If it weren't for religion...- (1)Brad scratched his head as he asked; “What are these again, the Commandments?”

So Brad, my friend, this is for you.

God’s Holy Word from the very beginning from Mount Sinai.

Does the Bible tell us what love is? Yes, the Bible tells us what love is.

God is love and He tells us that not lying, killing, stealing etc constitutes love.

I write about this all the time because I am passionate about it. Here is another article that gives you biblical references  and here also for our ‘love’ theme.

And here is a repeat of the disclaimer for my fellow religious friends who believe differently from me; I love you.

Grocery list

FORWARDED MESSAGE

about the power of prayer

I received the ‘GROCERY LIST’ as a forwarded message and thought to post it here because it gave me food for thought with regards to the power of prayer and the weight we give to it.
SQ Helper set 24
Thank you to the kind friend who forwarded this message to me.

GROCERY LIST

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries.
She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food.
John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once.
Visualizing the family needs, she said: ‘Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.’
John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.
Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, ‘Do you have a grocery list?’
Louise replied, ‘Yes sir.’ ‘O.K’ he said, ‘put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries.’
Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.
The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.
The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, ‘I can’t believe it.’
The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.
The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.
It was not a grocery list, it was a prayer, which said:
‘Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands.’
The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence.
Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said; ‘It was worth every penny of it. Only God knows the weight of a prayer.’
After you’ve read this, say a prayer of thanks for all your blessings. That’s all you have to do.
Peace and Blessings… In God we trust!
Praise God, He is All Merciful.

GREAT SHALL BE THE PEACE OF YOUR CHILDREN

BIBLE PROMISE

GREAT SHALL BE THE PEACE OF YOUR CHILDREN

GREAT SHALL BE THE PEACE OF THY CHILDREN

Aren’t your children behaving today? Aren’t they acting according to what you taught them? Do they find themselves in undesirable situations?

This is a good time to take hold of GOD’s promise that, ‘Great shall be the peace of your children.’

Thank you Father, for keeping our children safe and out of harm’s way. I’m praying for both my children today that

The LORD will bless them, and keep them:
The LORD make his face shine upon them, and be gracious unto them:
The LORD lift up his countenance upon them and give them peace.
And I pray that the LORD will put His name upon my children and bless them.

Just for fun I’ll share the song that I wrote for each of my children.

The first one is called, ‘Mother of an Angel.’

And the second one is called, ‘Brighter Than The Sun.’

You can find both these tracks also under my favourite people credits and links.

Victorious: Living a life of complete freedom and victory in Christ

BOOK LAUNCH

You can obtain a free copy of VICTORIOUS from Amazon on June 20-22, 2016.

Victorious: Living a life of complete freedom and victory in Christ

written by Barry Tallis

BOOK DESCRIPTION

God wants us to live victorious lives. But many of us are unaware we are in a battle or how to fight from a position of victory. Have you every thought about what it takes to have a joyous, successful, fulfilled life?

VICTORIOUSGod desires for us to live a life full of victory. He doesn’t want us to just “wade through life” until we go to heaven. He has given us His divine nature to move from a position of defeat, to a position of victory. VICTORIOUS has been designed to give you insight and direction on how to live this life. This book is for people who are tired of letting the enemy of this world triumph in their life, causing them to be disconnected and separated from God, even while sitting in the seats at church.

By implementing the principles and truths detailed in this book, many have come to realize the truth that the battle has already been won, and have started living it out on a daily basis.

You can live a life free from the enemy. From the constant attacks on your mind, body, and soul. You do not need to struggle another day with habitual sin. You can be free from it and the shame, guilt, and self-condemnation. As you read VICTORIOUS, you will experience a deeper connection to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

Review

If you were to implement the truth and principles as detailed in Barry’s book it becomes easy to realise that the battle is already won and to start living the victory. We will become victorious once we start living according to God’s truth and are obedient to His Word.

In VICTORIOUS Barry describes the various names that the devil is known by. This makes it easier for us, his readers, to recognise and resist evil. In addition, Barry summarises what the devil stands for  and who he is by saying that ‘Satan is a “spiritual supernatural being who opposed God and continuous to oppose Him and seeks to disrupt the plans and purposes of God’s people and lead them astray and into rebellion against God.”

I like how Barry quotes Scripture verses about the evil one and dissects the meaning of these verses because this makes it easier to recognise what is going on in our daily lives.

With Barry’s guidance, we gain a better understanding of how to see evil for what it is and how to resist evil and fight it with the appropriate verses and tools. Well done Barry I enjoyed reading the first part of your book and am looking forward to reading the rest of it.

REVIEW

Delightful book from a devout man

HOW TO HEAR GOD is a seven step, practical beginners guide to hearing God, words of knowledge and the gift of Prophecy. It was initially released a few years ago and this is an updated edition.

What I love about this book is that Ian gives examples from daily life to illustrate the points he is making and he does this really well. So well in fact that I read the book in one setting.

Ian encourages his readers to read a little bit every day however and to have a journal handy  for note taking.
It is mentioned in HOW TO HEAR GOD that a separate study guide for this book is available, which contains extra exercises and notes. You can use this individually or in small groups. This guide is available for free.

Ian explains what a personal prophecy is and how we can know that the information which comes to us is from God. He explains it in such a way that I think; ‘We should all know about this.’ This is book One and I’m already looking forward to book Two.

This is a delightful book filled with personal anecdotes and directions of a devout man who clearly walks with God and would love nothing better than for others to do the same. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles to hear God’s voice in their life and also for us who can do with some fine tuning.

First I am passionate about the God whom I serve. I am a 52 years old born-again charismatic Christian who lives in Sheffield, UK.

I am passionate about my family. I have been married to my wife Merle for over 25 years – we met at university and we have 2 lads, studying at University. We live and worship at a local church in Sheffield.

I am the co-director of a charity in Uganda, called Forever Caring Homes. The charity is designed to look after young children who have lost their parents through the AIDS epidemic that swept through Africa. Finally, I write books and blogs.

Why “Bible Study” Doesn’t Work

Book launch

Get your free copy on Amazon today and tomorrow June 19 and 20, 2016.

Why “Bible Study” Doesn’t Work: The epic failure of evangelicalism’s favorite discipleship method – and how YOUR CHURCH can do something about it

BOOK DESCRIPTION

When did Bible Study become the broccoli of the Christian life?

WHY BIBLE STUDYEat more broccoli! It’s good for you! Study the Bible more… attend more “Bible studies!” It’s good for you!

Shouldn’t studying the Bible be more than simply something that is good for us? Shouldn’t studying the Bible together with other followers of Jesus actually strengthen us for a healthy lifestyle of following Jesus on the journey of the Christ-life? Did we miss a turn somewhere?

Let me ask you a question. If more (or better) Bible studies is really the answer, how in the world do we have so many people who:

• Have gone to Sunday School for decades
• Have attended, helped in, and taught Vacation Bible School
• Have participated in multiple 13-week or 40-day video-based Bible study courses
• And are Biblically illiterate and don’t have any idea how to think or live Biblically?

It seems that we have a disconnect somewhere.

I’d like to offer, in this brief book, a way of rethinking Bible study. A way that refocuses studying the Bible with the intent of making disciples. A way that emphasizes not just the “what” of Bible study, but also the “how” and the “why” of studying the Bible.

REVIEW

Gerry is inviting us to re-evaluate the usefulness of Bible studies as they are conducted at the moment. He says, ‘What I don’t believe is “Join another Bible  study group and you’ll be more like Jesus.”

Amen to that!

Thank you, Gerry. A book like yours was long overdue.

Which Bible to read?

We all have our favourites and below I’ll share mine with you.

I think that any Bible is better than no Bible and the following Bibles are just a guideline and a few of my favourite Bibles and books from my bookshelf as well as links to some of my favourite sites.

Do I have a favourite Bible? I started reading the Kings James Bible and this is my go-to Bible because I love the poetic language and can find things easily and quickly in this Bible.

Jewish Bible

JEWISH BIBLE

Jewish Bibles don’t contain the gospels and other books from the New Testament but it is good to  remember that the Jewish Bible (re-labeled Old Testament by Christianity) is the authority on the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with GOD. Jesus is of Jewish heritage that is traced all the way back to King David’s lineage. Jesus’ teachings are based on the Jewish Bible and He quotes extensively from the Scripture from the prophets of old.

The JPS Hebrew-English Tanakah is an obvious choice because it has the Hebrew verses alongside the English translation.

King James Life Application Study Bible

LASB

For beginners, I like the King James version Life Application Study Bible from Tyndale House Publications because it has handy commentary on each page. And even though I don’t necessarily agree with all the commentary, overall for beginners the commentary is helpful to understand events in the  context of the history and culture of the Jewish nation.

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible

STRONGS

Strong’s Concordance contains a Hebrew and Aramaic Dictionary of the Jewish Bible (named Old Testament by Christians) and a Greek Dictionary of the New Testament. It is truly exhaustive because every word and every reference in the King James version is indexed. I like this version because it has slightly larger print.

The Brown-Driver-Bridges Hebrew and English Lexikon.

BROWN DRIVER LEXIKON

The Lexikon provides not only dictionary definitions for each word, but it relates to how each word is used in the Old Testament, and it categorises the nuances of meaning for each word.

Interlinear Greek-English New Testament

THE INETERLINEAR

The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament by Jay P. Green claims to be the only complete interlinear Bible available in English. It is keyed to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. It contains the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word as well as the Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. It’s a lot of fun, this one!

Young’s Literal Translation

YOUNGS LITERAL

The Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible is another of my favourites. I really like the language of Young’s Literal because it is a strictly literal translation of the original Hebrew and Greek texts.

Various King James versions

I started off with an authorised 1611 translation of the King James Bible and an original version. At the moment, I use an authorised King James Version copyright 1984 by the Zondervan Corporation.

The Oxford Annotated Apocrypha

OXFORD

I also have in my library the Oxford Annotated Apocrypha.  I enjoyed reading  the Apocrypha. The word Apocrypha means hidden and generally contains 1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, the Rest of Esther, the Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, (also titled Ecclesiasticus), Barach, The Letter of Jeremiah, Song of the Three Young Men, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, The Additions to Daniel, The Prayer of Manasseh, and 1 and 2 Maccabees which were written by Jewish people between 300 and 100 B.C.

The books accepted as inspired that are included in the Catholic Bible are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach (also known as Ecclesiasticus), and Baruch.

It is my understanding that Jewish people don’t recognise these books as being canonical. I don’t think that Jesus or the apostles ever quoted from the apocryphal books.

Bible Gateway and  Biblehub

Bible Gateway.com and Biblehub.com are great for research on the web. With options to look at parallel and linear bibles, listen to sermons, search topics, search the Strong’s, look at the Hebrew words and look words up in the Lexicon.

These are the websites which I use for most my Bible research. www.Biblehub.com  offers 39 different Bible translations and http://www.BibleGateway.com offers 53 different Bible translations for study purposes. You cannot go wrong with that.
In addition, with a mere click I can access the Strong’s Concordance, NAS Exhaustive Concordance, Englishman’s Concordance, Brown-Driver-Briggs and Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.

Love each other 1

LOVE 2

love 3

On both Bible gateway and Biblehub, many of the commercial versions of the Bible can be lined up aside or below each other to see the various translations.

Commentary

Commentary is provided for most Bible verses on both www.Biblehub.com and www.Biblegateway.com. The commentary helps when more background is needed to understand a verse fully.

Audio

www.Biblegateway.com provides options to listen to the Bible in various translations.

E Sword

For many years I used the free Bible software eSword and was very happy with this. At some stage I switched to a mac and couldn’t get used to the online mac version of esword. I now have both mac as well as PC and intend to start using eSword again.

Mac software

MACSWORD

On and off I use MacSword which is a free & open-source application. It contains many different bible translations in different languages, devotionals, commentaries, dictionaries and lexicons.

Franklin

I own a small electronic device by Franklin which facilitates the finding of Bible verses. Nowadays with the smart phones it should be easy enough to find any Bible reference on a smart phone.

To understand Scripture better

NEHEMIA

To understand Scripture better we listen to Biblical scholar Nehemia Gordon when he interviews ‘Hebrew Voices.’ Nehemia is a Karaite Jew and what I like about Karaite Judaism  or Karaism (also spelt Qaraite Judaism or Qaraism), (/ˈkærə.aɪt/ or /ˈkærə.ɪzəm/; Hebrew: יהדות קראית), is that it means, “Readers of the Hebrew Scriptures.” Kataite Judaism is a Jewish movement characterized by the recognition of the Tanakh alone as its supreme legal authority.
This practice is similar to my belief of Sola Scripture, where God’s Word, and not a religious leader, denomination or church, is considered the authority.

Hebrew Gospel of Matthew

The Hebrew Gospel of Matthew is a good resource to find out what was said in the original version.

Dead Sea Scrolls

The Dead Sea Scrolls provide historical significance and a priceless link to the background of the Bible.

Best option – Learn Hebrew

KEITH

Our best option to understand GOD’s Word fully is to learn Hebrew and find out for our self what the prophets of old really said. You can check out Biblical Foundations Academy where Keith Johnson  is offering a Biblical Hebrew Audio Course for people who are interested in learning Hebrew.

Above I’ve listed some of the resources that I use when reading Scripture or listening to God’s Word or for research when I write my books.

I’d love to hear about your best and favourite Biblical resources.
