AUTHOR BIO

Since his wife left (she probably was right about him having too many books) Gordon has fared the best he could, knocking around the old house, teaching a course on therapeutic trance for professionals, tending to some growing things (raspberry bushes, tomato plants, valerian, an apple tree, etc.) and staring at the computer screen waiting for literary inspiration from one of his various muses. Principle among them is his calico cat “Kara” with whom he is collaborating to develop a web-cast “The Holistic Growth Club For Entrepreneurs.” Kara is the namesake of Gordon’s childhood friend. To this day, some people insist she was “imaginary.” Without Kara – the sole feminine principle around – chaos and testosterone would undoubtably run amuck.

He’s worn a number of “hats” including those of a pastor, college professor, psychotherapist, and Detroit City (off of Cass Avenue) security agent. His favorite “hat” is his friendship with a few close personal and lots of wonderful Facebook friends. If you see him hiking, reading, learning about herbs and natural healing, or experimenting in the kitchen, he’ll probably have a far away look on his face as he loves going into trance. His grade school teachers chided him for being a “day dreamer” so he decided to do it for a living and get paid teaching others how to do it.

And now a word from Kara: “Gordon may be an acquired taste but he feeds me, lets me out during the day, and pets me often. He spends lots of time writing at the computer but I don’t mind. I give him many of “his” ideas and he includes them frequently. You can see why I’ve decided to keep him. Give the guy a chance – I think he’s got some great stuff to say….and please…for your own sake… don’t you dare think I’m kidding about this or making it up!”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Meredith Swift was born and raised in rural Victoria, Australia, the fourth of five children. She has travelled and lived in many different places and now resides in sunny Townsville, North Queensland, Australia.

Meredith accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour in 2010 and began establishing a close personal relationship with Him. In 2016, she wrote “Hearing His Voice – Meeting Jesus in the Garden of Promise” during a difficult and challenging season of her life, which included a divorce, resignation from her teaching job, relocation to a larger city and the mystery illness of her daughter who was bedridden for three months. All of us live forever

Mimi believes in living forever, but even if you don’t believe in an afterlife, you will still leave an imprint and live forever in the hearts of your loved ones.

Religion does not have to come into it. As Tony Judt puts it so eloquently, we’re all responsible for the impact we have on the people around us.

The following is quoted from Tony Judt, historian, (02/91/1948-06/08/2010).

Just months before the historian Tony Judt died of ALS in 2010, he gave an interview to Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air. When she asked him about his spiritual beliefs, he replied as follows.

I don’t believe in an afterlife. I don’t believe in a single or multiple godhead. I respect people who do, but I don’t believe it myself. But there’s a big “but” which enters in here: I am much more conscious than I ever was, for obvious reasons, of what it will mean to people left behind once I’m dead.

It won’t mean anything for me, but it will mean a lot to them, and it’s important for them, by which I mean my children or my wife or my close friends, that some spirit of me is, in a positive way, present in their lives, in their heads, in their imaginings, and so on.

In one curious way I’ve come to believe in the afterlife as a place where I still have moral responsibilities, just as I do in this life, except that I can only exercise them before I get there. Once I get there, it’ll be too late.

So no god, no organized religion, but a developing sense that there’s something bigger than the world we live in, including after we die, and that we have responsibilities in that world.

Few, if any, of our Facebook or Twitter friends will be at our death bed, or care either way.

How will we be remembered by our close friends and family members? How did we or do we impact their lives on a daily basis?

What unique task were we given and how did we live up to this?

Well, sometimes life just sucks, and then consequently your eulogy would suck too. Double whammy.

The word eulogy-to-be is a concession we had to make because certain family members became quite traumatised when the subject of writing a eulogy popped up.

I am Tina Pocernich, and I live in Wisconsin. I’ve been married nearly 25 years and am the mother and stepmother to five adult children: three boys and two girls, and eight grandchildren. I work full-time for a technical college, and recently, I’ve become an author. My passions are transparency, integrity, and truth.

In January 2017, I participated in a small group of women studying the book Dream It, Pin It, Live It by Terri Savelle Foy. For the first time in my life, I focused on looking at, and establishing personal goals and a vision board for a 12-18 month period. One of those goals was to write a book. When my goals were in front of me, I believe I was more aware of opportunities before me. In January, I also noticed an ad on my Facebook feed regarding Chandler Bolt’s Self-Publishing School. I downloaded and read two of his books, Published and Book Launch. Then I joined Chandler’s online Self-Publishing School Mastermind Community to gain even more knowledge and support throughout the book writing process. I have no idea how many times I may have seen that information in my feed previously, but I know I wouldn’t have noticed it if I hadn’t set a goal to write a book.

In July of 2017, I completed my book, Open Doors Open Hearts. God has allowed me to experience various things in life, and I believe it gives me purpose to share my possessions and experiences with others.

As a logical and direct person, I present my thoughts in a very practical way, without a lot of flowery language. My style is simple, but straight from the heart.

ARISTON C.M. was born in Ohio. Today she is a single mother of five, living in Ohio. She is an entrepreneur. She holds multiple degrees in theology and child development.

Her challenges as a child ultimately inspired her to start a non-profit organization that currently addresses the needs of at-risk youth and those with developmental disabilities.

In her free time she writes poetry and participates in speaking engagements that empower women in all sectors of life, but with particular dedication to survivors like herself.

It has been said that Janine Logue Wooten “packs more living into one lifetime than anyone.”

Like most creatives she was neither recognized or encouraged early on, and was in fact discouraged from trying anything unconventional. She married and started her family at the young age of 21. Janine always truly loved being a Mommy – and now she’s been promoted to Grammy! But the kids grew, as kids do, and eventually became independent adults, and she found herself feeling like something was missing, career wise.

She tried her hand at a few things: owning a jewelry business, making jewelry, tutoring Math, importing Turkish carpets, selling Real Estate, selling Diamonds, selling Roofing, and being a superintendent for a construction firm… Seriously. Sometimes overlapping. Clearly tons of energy, drive and motivation – but you might notice a bit of a lack of focus.

Janine loves to learn, with the list of subjects being just as broad and varied as the work history. Put it in front of her, and she will want to know everything there is to know about it, and then dive into it, and do it to the best of her ability.

(Perhaps certain personality types come to mind, such as ADD, ADHD, OCD, and she now knows, serious dyslexia! Although, back in the day, these things were not known. She just did her best, and tried to sit still and conform. Her mom to this day says Janine “can’t sit still”!)

She can now see how the labyrinth of her life has been perfectly leading her to this place all along! Everything along the way has been part of the grand picture, a small but crucial piece of the puzzle that makes up a magnificent and unique story! A beautiful tapestry of a life fully lived!

Her favorite things to do are painting, writing, teaching, helping others learn and grow, reading, traveling, walking on the beach, and “good food” outings with great friends!

She is finally in her “right place”, and loving the work she is doing. Her efforts are finally all tied together with a clear focus: helping people find and live their own best lives – through her art, her writing and teaching about clean living.

Janine’s earnest prayer is that many people will be blessed by her work. She gives God all the credit and all the Glory for designing such a perfect plan, and overseeing the job even when she was slacking or not understanding where He was taking her.

Why two titles?

The book is listed as The Holy Grail of Book Publishing as a kindle and as The Holy Grail of Book Launching as a softcover. Why?

I blame it on Debbie. She came to visit and mucked up our internet, power and phone lines for nearly a week. As such the cover change-over got stuck in cyber space. In addition Create Space took nine days to reduce the price on the softcover and ever since I’ve been  v e r y  reluctant to make any changes. Eventually I may synchronise the covers but so far the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Readers actually like the fact that the kindle has a different cover from the paper copy.

Just to be clear; there’s only one book with two covers and two titles. But one book with the same content.

I like to explain how the cover came about.

I asked my daughter to come up with a cover. She makes all my covers for me. She is GREAT!

She did an amazing job and I loved what she came up with. It looked like this.

So why didn’t we go with this cover?

We didn’t use this cover because we couldn’t get it right.

What? It was right, yes? Well no.
One of the final steps before publishing is to make the cover thumbnail size to see what it looks like on Amazon and this beautiful cover looked like this thumbnail size.

Mmm, see what I mean? It didn’t work. We couldn’t read the word ‘Grail.’ So it needed adjusting.

My daughter then set out to create the following covers to make the wording stand out more. These covers turned out marginally better but lost the elegance of the original cover.

                    

I said, to my daughter, ‘How hard can it be to make this cover suited for Amazon.’ Just DO something, you know, colour, font, size, I dunno, make it work!’

She said, ‘Sure Mum. How about these?’

And these?

Talented kid huh?

But I liked the first one best, the turquoise coloured one, cause I thought it looked ‘elegant.’

i even had people vote on these covers but I just couldn’t get happy about it.

Hmmphh. Now what? Any of those covers would do, but I just didn’t ‘feel’ it.

My daughter said, ‘Mum, what do you want? What do you like? Why don’t you google ‘covers’ and see what comes up. When you see one you like, show it to me and I’ll take it from there.’

I didn’t really know what I liked other than I like ‘retro’ and ‘chalkboard.’

So I asked ‘Google Images’ and ‘Stock Unlimited’ and ‘Canva’ to show me ‘retro,’ vintage’ and ‘chalk board.’

Two images came up that I liked.  Now we have inspiration. All credit to the creators of these images. I couldn’t find their names.

We then sat down, together this time, and played in www.canva.com for a night and came up with this.

I liked it!

BUT,  I did not feel that it carried the kind of authority that I believe came with the title.

Also, once more, it did not read great, once we turned it into a thumbnail.

Launch date was getting closer and closer and we still did not have a cover.

My daughter said, ‘Don’t worry about it, I’ll sort it,’ as she trotted off to do her volunteer coaching.

But I was worried because it had taken us months to get to this point and launch was now only weeks if not days away and I do not ‘do’ stress very well.

So, on my own this time I went back into the http://www.canva.com portal, thinking ‘BIG CLEAR FONTS’ and ‘I like vintage.’

I tested out each and every font on Canva and then gave my arms and shoulders rest till my daughter came home and showed her this cover.

Together we played a bit more and came up with this clearer and sharper picture.

After this I asked my daughter if she could take the image to Photoshop and enter the text of the subtitle in the little book symbol.

Another day we said down together once more and created the covers for the three volumes on the inside of the book.

And finally my daughter went to http://www.covervault.com to download a free 3D template to create a graphic for the three volumes.

A few people have asked how the covers came about and I thought to share the process. It literally took us nearly 6 months working on these, on and off to get to the final covers. Love um or hate um, this is it.

I received feedback that the cover was a little arty and not necessarily looked as if they were designed to appeal to an audience of writers. For this reason I decided to create a poll. I asked my readers and audience to vote for their most favourite cover.

In addition we added  the words ‘3 VOLUME set.’ Because it was pointed out to me that readers, at a glance, didn’t realise that the book is actually a massive 3 VOLUME set at 363 pages.

These were the covers, with slightly changed heading that we added into the mix.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is the cover that was voted overwhelmingly as a favourite cover.

We decided to follow the trend of some of the leaders in the industry and have one cover for the kindle, The Holy Grail of Book Publishing and a different cover for the paper copy of  The Holy Grail of Book Launching.

To be able to answer these questions I studied the Bible and pulled up references relating to Yom Kippur and atonement, repentance and forgiveness. I studied also how the  Jewish people celebrate Yom Kippur and found that rabbinical traditions do not always correlate with what the Bible, God’s Holy Word, tells us.

The Yom Kippur as described in this book YOM KIPPUR, Day of Atonement, is not written according to Christian traditions, nor is it Yom Kippur according to Jewish traditions.

The Yom Kippur that I describe in my book is the Holy Feast of The Lord. It is HIS Feast, not ours. We’re invited to participate in His Holy Feast.

This Yom Kippur book is based on the directions given by our Father and contains His Words about His Feast as well as (in Chapter Two) a description of Jewish traditions including the Al Chet (confession of sins).

Traditionally  on Yom Kippur the story of Jonah is read out to remind us of God’s mercy.

Jonah goes to Nineveh

When GOD told Jonah to go to Nineveh to give the inhabitants a chance to save themselves, Jonah tried to run away from the task that he had been given. So much so that he didn’t really care if he would live or die as long as he did not have to tell the wicked people in Nineveh that they could be saved.

As far as he was concerned they were bad people who deserved what was coming to them and he was not prepared to help save them from their fate.

Jonah tried without much success to hide from GOD; he was thrown out of the boat, swallowed by the whale, spat out on the beach and eventually did as he was told.

Jonah sulked when people were forgiven

Soon after Jonah delivered his message to the people of Nineveh they felt bad enough about their wicked deeds to ask GOD to forgive them. And GOD forgave them. This made Jonah even more upset than he had been before and he went to sulk outside of the city in the shade and told GOD, “It is better for me to die than to live.” Jonah wished death upon himself because he was so very angry that GOD forgave wicked people after they asked him for forgiveness.

Jonah experienced GOD’s compassion himself when he was forgiven after running away from GOD. And when he consequently was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a whale and yet lived. GOD even grew Jonah a large plant to shade him from the hot sun whilst Jonah was feeling sorry for himself. Yet Jonah struggled to understand why GOD would forgive evil people even though they showed some measure of remorse for their bad deeds.

Jonah felt sorry for a plant which withered but couldn’t forgive people who showed remorse after they had done the wrong thing.

GOD is merciful and responds to remorse

Jonah said “I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.”

The book of Jonah teaches us about God’s mercy and is read in its entirety during the Feast of Yom Kippor which is the day of atonement as mentioned in the bible.

Jonah – A Lesson in Compassion by Rabbi Dr Greg Killian

Rabbi Dr. Greg Killian tells us in his study “Jonah – a lesson in compassion” that “Yonah son of Amittai was the son of the widow from Tzorphath with whom Elijah the prophet stayed during the years of famine, and that it was this boy that Elijah revived.”

Yonah’s mother was from the tribe of Asher, and his father from Zevulun.

Amittai is derived from the Hebrew word: ‘emet’, meaning truth. From this we understand that Jonah (Yonah means dove in Hebrew) is a man of truth. Truth, as Jonah understands it, demands that evil never be overlooked; evil must be punished. Jonah is the “son of truth”, a man of unbending commitment to the truth. This may explain Jonah’s stance that evil must be punished. He was struggling to comprehend GOD’s compassion for evil people even though he experienced GOD’s mercy himself.

The story of Jonah teaches us to be compassionate towards one and other.

Jesus said, blessed are the merciful because they shall obtain mercy.

Mother Teresa was just declared a saint. Why was that? Because she devoted her life to helping India’s poor, particularly those abandoned and discarded.If it takes a life of total self sacrifice and miracles to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church; I’m not holding my breath.

When I realised this, it scared the heck out of me.YOUR STORY CREATES A LEGACY

This is what happened to me. I suffered pancreatic attacks and ruptured my appendix. After emergency admission to hospital by ambulance I spent a week on a drip. Due to septicemia and intolerance to antibiotics the doctors decided against an operation because an adverse outcome was seen to be too great. Eventually the doctors sent me home ‘to get better’ so that they could operate on me and take my appendix out.

Haha, I still have my appendix, praise the Lord!

I was laid up in bed, very sick for a very long time… how does nearly a decade of just lying in bed sound? A wonderful homeopath visited and prescribed Cleavers and Paragen.

I prayed. My daughters prayed. God heard me! I am now a #1 bestselling author of three books. Alleluia!

My time has not yet come but no one knows when that might be, When you come so close, it makes you think, so today, what is my legacy? Or what is it going to be?Every day we live our legacy.

I now help people with food intolerances and allergies, and I help people live and leave their legacy by helping them launch their books. How good is that?

Get ’em off! Armed police order Muslim woman to remove her burkini…

When do two wrongs ever make a right? Innocent women are being penalised in a war that is not of their doing.

A few days ago a 34-year-old woman, identified only as Siam, whilst on the beach of a popular French tourist town, was asked to remove a layer of clothing and being given an on the spot fine by armed police.

There are claims that the situation and pictures were a set-up. If this were to be the case, would this diminish what happened? Of course not.

Regardless, if this were a set-up or not, this is an outrageous situation where an innocent woman is fined and asked to ‘undress’ because of a ‘law.’  All indications, despite the claims, are that this was not a set-up.

What do the French courts say about a ‘law’ that tells women to undress?

French judges have said the ban was ‘necessary, appropriate and proportionate.’ It appears that the law supports three armed officers pointing a pepper spray canister in the face of another Muslim lady and telling her that she was in breach of a new rules outlawing swimming costumes that cover the entire body.

On the beach it showed, “Armed police waiting for Muslim women to come out of the sea at Nice, and then warning them about their choice of head scarves.” Women were fined for wearing burkinis, ‘modest swimwear,’ on the beach in Cannes, with details recorded on what will amount to a criminal record. Two young women were made to leave the water by the police even though they were not wearing the burkini.

David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes, who introduced the burkini ban, defended the police officer’s behaviour by stating that all ‘beach dress that ostentatiously shows a religious affiliation was unwelcome and offensive and risked provoking people and so risked public order.

I honestly struggle to find the words to express my feelings, outrage, dismay and fury about the above situation.

A Facebook friend kindly pointed out to me that guns and bombs could be hidden under burkas and burkinis.

Silly me for not thinking about that. I knew that weapons and ignitable substances can be and have been concealed under beach towels, in trouser pockets, under coats, in cars, brief cases, backpacks, in shoe soles, and even in body cavities.
What I failed to realise is that if we start terrorising innocent women and their children on our beaches and make them undress in public, this will solve all ‘terrorist related’ problems…

Quite a knee jerk reaction if ever I heard of one.

France’s Highest Court suspends ‘illegal’ burkini ban as ‘serious violation of freedoms.

The State Council ruled today that the measure was a “serious and clearly illegal violation of fundamental freedoms.”

The Court said local authorities could only introduce measures restricting individual freedoms if wearing the Islamic swimsuit on beaches represented a “proven risk’ to public order. And there was no such risk concerning Villeneuve-Loubet, a resort on the Cote d’Azur between Nice and Cannes.

The French Council of the Muslim Faith hailed the ruling as a “victory for common sense.”

Amen to that.

Leading up to the launch of The Holy Grail of Book Launching I’ll be releasing mini tutorials all with great info and tips on How To Launch Your Book Successfully.

One question I get asked often is how to get great reviews on Amazon. I always answer this question the same way: ‘Write a great book!’

Is that all there is to it? This is where it starts for sure.  Without a great book you won’t get great reviews. But you’re right, there is more to it.

Can family and friends leave reviews? Think about it. Does not make much sense does it? Not unless they declare to be auntie, uncle, mum and sis so that we can measure the size of the grain of salt.

When I launched my books, none of my friends nor family knew about it. When I wrote my first book, My Story of Survival,  I did not want anyone close to me know how really ill I was.  Because we all live a fair distance from each other, I got away with this.
My second book, Mimi’s Book Launch Plan, did not seem to have any relevance to any of my family nor friends, so once more I did not mention it to anyone.

None of my close family nor friends share the same religion that I do, so for the third time I did not share my book God Healed Me with any of them.

Family and friends leaving a review therefore has never been an issue for me. However, the issue comes up every now and then with readers of Mimi’s Book Launch Plan asking me how to get reviews for their books. For you I wrote this mini tutorial.

Great Tips!

In accordance with Amazon guidelines, book authors and publishers may continue to provide free or discounted copies of their books to readers, as long as the author or publisher does not require a review in exchange or attempt to influence the review.

Every author wants good reviews. How do you get these? I’ve heard that less than one percent of readers of our books leave a review. Is this true? I had a browse on the web and could not get a definite number of it but here are some opinions from various forums. As you can read from the comments above, it appears that very few readers leave a review.

How can we help this process along and entice readers to leave a review? I’ll mention some options that you may not be aware of. Or you may have heard about it and forgotten.

Before we get going. Under Amazon’s guidelines compensation is not allowed in return for a review. And when people are given an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) this is with the understanding that we welcome all feedback, both positive and negative.

It is OK for authors to leave a review for another author?
I’ve often heard people say that this is not allowed. It may not have been allowed in the past but it is allowed now according to Amazon’s guidelines,

Can I write a Customer review of my own book?

No, you cannot on Amazon. You are allowed to do so on www.Goodreads.com.  Amazon encourages authors to use our BOOK DESCRIPTION on our product page, the EDITORIAL REVIEWS and MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR sections of our book details page, to communicate with our customers about our book.

FUN FACT TWO

Can I ask my family to write a Customer Review for my book? No, this is not allowed under Amazon guidelines. However, your family and friends can leave an editorial review.

So what are you waiting for? Ask Auntie May and Uncle Bob to write an editorial review for your book which you can proudly display on your product page. Sure you can ask www.kirkus.com too, but why not ask your family first?

After sis and mom have told the world all about your book, you may not even feel that you need a Kirkus review any more.

FUN FACT THREE

If you’re like me, you thought that your family wasn’t allowed to sing your praises on Amazon; well we were wrong. Amazon gives our family and friends ample opportunity to participate.

Just recently I discovered that there is this nifty feature on Amazon called Customer Discussions.  Family, friends and customers alike are invited to discuss your book and communicate with each other. Isn’t that crazy good?

Amazon Vine Program

Be courteous when you ask a top reviewer if they are happy to read your book. You’ll have to do your homework before you approach a member of the Vine Program. Make sure that the Vine member is interested in books in your niche. It is no use to send a non-fiction book to a reader who specifically states that they are interested in fiction only and vice versa. You can find out about their preferences by browsing their profile page. Not all Vine members have their email address displayed on their profile page and you may have to do some detective work to find their contact details. I like how Barry quotes Scripture verses about the evil one and dissects the meaning of these verses because this makes it easier to recognise what is going on in our daily lives.

REVIEW

Delightful book from a devout man

HOW TO HEAR GOD is a seven step, practical beginners guide to hearing God, words of knowledge and the gift of Prophecy. It was initially released a few years ago and this is an updated edition.

What I love about this book is that Ian gives examples from daily life to illustrate the points he is making and he does this really well. So well in fact that I read the book in one setting.

Ian encourages his readers to read a little bit every day however and to have a journal handy  for note taking.
It is mentioned in HOW TO HEAR GOD that a separate study guide for this book is available, which contains extra exercises and notes. You can use this individually or in small groups. This guide is available for free.

Ian explains what a personal prophecy is and how we can know that the information which comes to us is from God. He explains it in such a way that I think; ‘We should all know about this.’ This is book One and I’m already looking forward to book Two.

This is a delightful book filled with personal anecdotes and directions of a devout man who clearly walks with God and would love nothing better than for others to do the same. I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles to hear God’s voice in their life and also for us who can do with some fine tuning.

Hi – I am Ian Banner and I have a few passions …

First I am passionate about the God whom I serve. I am a 52 years old born-again charismatic Christian who lives in Sheffield, UK.

I am passionate about my family. I have been married to my wife Merle for over 25 years – we met at university and we have 2 lads, studying at University. We live and worship at a local church in Sheffield.

I am the co-director of a charity in Uganda, called Forever Caring Homes. The charity is designed to look after young children who have lost their parents through the AIDS epidemic that swept through Africa. It’s quite small, and lots of others do work like this as well, but I do it because I felt the lord tell me to.

Choose faith over fear

This lady has done her research re food and GMO and organic and why to choose one over the other.

In her book Christine shares her 4-principle approach to becoming unstuck and fully charged in life through God’s teachings.

 

She does this by addressing body image, thought and emotion issues and inspiring people to live fully charged, happy lives. What I really like is how Christine draws the analogy between food and how and why certain foods serve you better than others and she links this in with God’s purpose for us and our life.

I’ve studied nutrition quite intensely and have come to the understanding that there is way more to food that we realise. Oranges grow close to the sun, ‘when we eat oranges we get vibrant energy’ and more little gems like that.

I agree with Christina that God has a purpose for our life and all we need to do is heed that call to live a fulfilling life. Christine’s book helps us find out how to.

‘Faith your way to happy’ is not just another inspiring read but gives us steps to follow so that we can live our purpose.

I love this book!

Let’s get this out of the way first. The title irked me. I hadn’t benefited from stress. My whole life fell in a heap because of stress. Benefiting from stress?

I cannot explain how or why, but as I kept reading the wisdom and insights and personal stories .. the dots connected.

I was convinced that I was ‘on top’ of my stresses, managing them very well, and dealing with them in appropriate ways. I’ve been through major stresses in my life and I’ve learned to deal with stress to make them manageable.

And then it hit me. These unavoidable stresses in one’s life; you can actually minimise them! Or maybe even get rid of some, or most of them, altogether. It is because of how Robyn looks at stress and deals with it in such a wholesome way that I started, despite my initial reluctance, appreciate the benefit of stress.

Wow, that was a real eye-opener to me.

This book is filled with wonderful advice for dating and married couples. There’s a free 90-day roadmap and coaching video and the book also includes a practical list of expectations couples can have of each other.

I find this list of expectations super useful and will share this with my children because to be able to find common ground to agree on, we need to be aware of the expectations that happen on a moment to moment basis.

What touched me most in this book is Barry’s eagerness and willingness to make his relationship work and make things happen. I was really moved by that.

Take nothing for granted but plan, plan, plan.

Why I wouldn’t give my daughter my unpicker.

This morning my daughter asked me for an unpicker. In case you don’t know what an unpicker is I looked up the dictionary definition of the word unpicker. When I typed it in what came up was the word seam ripper, which is another word for a small tool used for unpicking stitches.

I asked my daughter if she had what it took to be in possession of an unpicker and was met by a blank gaze. So I explained to her that it takes an extraordinary amount of resolve, self-restraint, patience, organisation, sense of priority and determination to be the proud owner of an unpicker.

You can only use one unpicker at a time

I explained to her that, once you realise that you are unpickerless it usually takes around two to three months of being in this unpickerless state before the average person takes positive action to resolve it. During that period of two to three months you fret and think about where you possibly could have put it; did someone ‘borrow’ it and not return your unpicker? And you’re left wondering if you have lost this precious tool forever. If you were to visit the haberdashery store in this period of time you are likely to forget whilst you’re in the store that you are in fact unpickerless.

And even if you were to remember whilst in the store that perhaps you don’t own this valuable instrument any longer, this unpickerless state is precarious because none of us is so stingy as not to be willing to spend $2.95 to be in the possession of an unpicker. But few of us are prepared to spend this money if in fact we already have one because, let’s face it, you can only use one unpicker at a time.

Having said that, I remember a brief blissful period where I literally splurged on 4 unpickers. One for each of my daughters, one for my husband (who never used one, this was my spare) and one for me.

Blissful it was but more than blissful it was brief because, due to Murphy’s Law, everyone’s unpicker without ever having been used, ended up within the shortest period of time, either blunt or vamoosed. Which, yes you guessed it, meant that everyone else borrowed my sharp shiny brand new red unpicker whilst all I managed to find were the dud blunt unpickers. Strangely this happened in a household where I am the only occasional seamstress.

Being unpickerless is hazardous

However I am digressing. I explained to my daughter that the period of time it takes to determine that one truly is unpickerless is one of the more hazardous periods of one’s life. This is because I now make do with either a blunt old unpicker, which is likely to dig itself into my fingers during my futile attempts to make it work. Or similarly risky, I will use my sharpest little pair of scissors or knife which comes with its own obvious hazards, jeopardising my willing but not always skilful attempts to make things work.

On average this unpickerless period in my life lasts from between a few weeks up to a number of months.

Clean out of unpickers and seam rippers

If my memory serves me well, once it is well and truly established that I am unpickerless, one of the following scenarios will unfold. I finally manage to make it to the local haberdashery store, which by the way is always out of my regular route. The local haberdashery store usually is a popular place where ladies catch up on all the latest and chances are that it will be a while before it is my turn.

After I humbly ask the lady behind the counter where the ‘unpickers’ are, she will respond, “Do you mean a seam ripper?’’ To which I meekly will nod, yes.

This lovely lady with her shiny black hair at the ‘Sew-For-Fun’ store is likely to disappear behind her counter through the backdoor and not resurface for a minimum of five or ten minutes. She will disappear for the kind of period of time where you know for a fact that she is not looking for a seam ripper but checking Facebook notifications on her mobile phone whilst talking to her boyfriend and downing a cup of coffee or gobbling down a slab of chocolate.

After this, she will return to the counter smiling benignly and tell me that they are “clean out of un-pickers at the moment.” When will the next batch be in?

Let’s assume that I dare ask her when she expects the next batch of unpickers to come in. I probably daren’t, but let’s assume for a moment that I will. This wonderful junior in training will respond with a shrug, telling me that she doesn’t know when the rep will come in next, or she thinks it is Thursday next week but she doesn’t know for sure, and she cannot guarantee when the next batch of unpickers will come in.

This is the best case scenario, if indeed I dared ask her when she would expect the next batch of unpickers to come in. It is more likely that if I did have the nerve to do this, that she would go looking for her supervisor for the next 20 minutes or so whilst I had no other choice than to patiently wait at the counter for her return, and she would tell me that neither she nor the supervisor knew when the new unpickers would arrive.

By now I am thinking that if I were to go through the store called ‘Sew-For-Fun’ I will probably, somehow, somewhere turn up a unpicker but alas, she’s worn me down sufficiently for me to graciously back off and promise to come back in a week or so to see if the next batch has arrived.

Thoughts of melting unpickers

At this point of my story my daughter has lost her appetite for my unpicker, but I am not quite finished yet. I explain to her that indeed it takes a strong person with restraint and fortitude to be the owner of an unpicker. I ask her, if she wonders at all why the store would be clean out of unpickers?

My daughter is now literally walking backwards towards the door, attempting to quietly disappear, but I insist; “Surely you wonder why the store has no unpickers?”

No, she doesn’t. But I do. As a proud owner of an unpicker, I imagine that perhaps a local school needed a whole batch for their sewing class, or a local lady needed a bunch for her charity sewing club.

I explain to my daughter that these thoughts are necessary if one is trying to secure an unpicker for oneself. Because if indeed the local school bought the last batch, we can assume that the rep will return next week with a whole new batch of them. But what if the overseas supplier had run out? Then what? It could be months and months before they would be back in stock. What if the dock workers were on strike and a crate of unpickers are sitting on the dock in the hot sun, desperately wanting, but not able to get to those in need? Would they melt?

‘Do you think about those things?’ I asked my daughter. ‘When you ask me if you can borrow my unpicker, does any of this cross your mind?’

My daughter groans in response. She whispers, ‘Mum, I’m good, I’ll do something else instead.’ But I am not quite finished yet …

MY REVIEW

What I love about this book is that it is written with much love and passion.

From her bio I learn that G. Nieves is a passionate researcher of Scripture and religious history and as such she has found  that many Christian customs and concepts don’t have a biblical foundation.

This is where the author and I agree 100%. The book therefore did not strike me as radical but I found a fellow student who loves The Word with a passion as I do also.

Did I agree with everything the author has to say on the subject? Not really. Although I agreed with a lot. But I would never argue the point of the Trinity because the word Trinity is not found in the Bible and that is where the argument stops for me.

The research is thorough and honest. The author does not try to push her agenda without backing up every claim she makes. I’m just a little amused that it seems to be an issue for many religious people because the Bible doesn’t mention Trinity anywhere,  so why would it need refuting? The Word speaks for itself.

Gladys  Nieves has been a student of the Bible as far as she can remember. She is a passionate researcher of Scripture and religious history and loves to get to the root of current ideas and why people believe what they do.

 She has found that many Christian customs and concepts don’t have a biblical foundation. For this reason, her research hassled her to challenge current ideas and this book is no exception.

 This  is the first of a series of books designed to motivate others to think for themselves, to search and see if their beliefs are truly in harmony with God’s Word.  She is convinced that truth does exist and that it matters greatly. We just have to search for it.

G. Nieves has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Master level studies in Communications. She has worked as a journalist for major newspapers and is an independent writer. She also loves to travel and read historical novels.

Excerpt 

Where are you from?
And where are you going?

The basket of chips sizzles as it descends into the hot oil. The shop owner looks sideways at Amelia. ‘Where are you from?’
Amelia tenses, thoughts flashing through her mind. She doesn’t want to be associated with where she’s lived for the last eight years and anyway, she sure as hell isn’t going back there. As far as she’s concerned that means she isn’t from there. She leans against the counter, her clenched hands resting in her khaki trouser pockets. She realises that she doesn’t know anymore where she’s from or where she belongs, but this isn’t the right answer.

Through the shop window she watches her two teenage daughters mucking around in the car. The lyrics of Limp Bizkit transmitted by the car radio fill the air in and around the shop whilst the car trailer with all their stuff is shaken by the children’s antics.
The shop owner follows her glance, continuing his inquisition, ‘Oh, you’re on holidays, are you?’
No, she isn’t. She smiles at him.

Finally he’s covering the chips with salt and wrapping them in layers of paper.
He now demands, ‘Where’re you going?’

She pulls her faded jacket tightly around her whilst wrinkling her freckled nose. She looks up at the ceiling. If only she knew where she was going. The one thing she knows for sure right now is that sh doesn’t know how to answer any of his questions. She has absolutely no idea where she’s going and certainly doesn’t need to be reminded of this.

My review

Glimpses of Light contains stories and poems of imagination and hope. I was stoked that my submission for this anthology was accepted and even more jazzed when I received my copy. I feel proud and humbled that my name appears next to well-established authors and grateful that I was allowed to contribute.

I enjoyed reading all the stories and poetry in the anthology but one in particular touched my heart. It is called Window Seat and was written by Ellen Carr. I found her words warm and comforting despite the hopelessness conveyed.

What struck me most about Ellen’s poetry was not what was said, but the power and holiness of the unspoken in her writing.

MY REVIEW

Jim says that belonging as social creatures, we need to feel that we are a part of a group or groups. This is first addressed in our family. Later, we branch out into groups formed from peers and/or interests. He then addresses how all of those factors are important in our development.

I really like how Jim approaches the concept of self esteem. He gets to the bottom of it by breaking self esteem issues down in small parts and then he addresses each and every part thoroughly.

I started to read this book more or less on behalf of someone else to see how I could help this person along. What struck me when I was reading this book is that, as I was reading, I realised that I could use some help myself in the area of self esteem. It is obvious that Jim is an experienced counselor who has a good grasp on how to successfully resolve issues of low self esteem.

What grabbed me is his summation of what love is. ‘Love is more than an emotional reaction to another person. It is the summation of all the ways in which we act and react to one another.’ Amen to that. Really useful guide for anyone who struggles with self image issues.

What happened to me

My Story of Survival

If you’ve read My Story of Survival, you know that I burned out pretty good and due to neglecting my health for a long time nearly ended up on the scrapheap. But GOD is good and heard my prayers and now I have all this bonus time available to write books.

I felt that I needed to tell what happened to me as a warning to other people not to neglect their health, because life is very precious and none of us is invincible.

When I started off writing the book I didn’t particularly enjoy what I was doing because, let’s face it, why write about illness once you are starting to feel better?

However, during the process of writing the book I got excited that little ol’ me would be able to help some people and possibly even prevent others from getting sick, just by telling my story.

I got hold of this book for a friend of mine that has the same type of problem as Mimi. I think the book is very useful for people discovering how your bodies react to food. I am sure this book will help my friend. I recommend this book to anyone who has any kind of physical or emotional eating disorder. I gave it 4 out of 5 because I would like it to be longer. I hope the author writes more.

All the way from the other side of the planet people are reading what I am writing down and gaining some benefit. How cool is that?

Less than ten days later on 26.10.2015 My Story of Survival ranks in another relevant category #1 Best Seller under Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Why is this so good? This is so good because all these categories are relevant to the content of my book and anyone who is suffering from any of these conditions would have come across my book if they were googling for this. That means that my wish and prayer of being able to help people, is being answered.

Chronic Pain

Amazon #1 Best Seller under Chronic Pain on 26.12.2015. And that just was like a huge band-aid on wounds for me and I couldn’t feel as much as a twinge of pain all day long on the 26th.

Viral Diseases

Amazon #1  Best Seller in Viral Diseases. Nothing wrong with going viral, is there?
So what if I didn’t agree with any of the labels I was given? The conditions attached to these labels still affect me one way or another and these labels are still being handed out to people today.

Thanks to Amazon, customers who are affected by similar labels can find My Story of Survival and hopefully benefit from reading it and join my pursuit for a clean bill of health.

I have only listed the #1 rankings. At various times My Story of Survival ranked also under Best sellers in the categories of Medical Books- Medicine, Diseases and Physical ailments and Nutrition. To be honest I couldn’t quite keep up with where my book was travelling.

I know that I had already mentioned that, but it is such a pretty banner I just couldn’t resist finishing on such a good note. Because that self-help was only possible for me due to the oodles of faith.

Glimpses of Light

Glimpses of Light, stories and poems of imagination and hope.
